What is left for the Rangers to do this summer?

Nick PerriJul 7, 2010

Yesterday afternoon the Rangers signed Ryan Mcdonagh to an entry level contract. Many fans, including myself, believe that Mcdonagh will crack the roster this season. If he does, which he should, the Rangers would have MDZ, Gilroy, Rozi, Redden, Mcdonagh, and trusting what Sather has said, both Marc Staal and Dan Girardi will be part of the team. That adds up to a total of 7 defensemen when only 6 are needed. From what Sather has said the Rangers are in a rebuilding stage. But a few players may have to be moved to make this possible. Reliable sources have said that the Rangers may be moving a defenseman or two, making room for more players to move up. Rumors have surfaced that Wade Redden will be waived, thus moving him and his $6.5million cap hit to Hartford. Also, Matt Gilroy has been in a couple of trade rumors. So, with that in mind, what is left for the Rangers to do this off-season?

Well one thing that is probable, is resigning Marc Staal and Dan Girardi. Though I believe Marc Staal should be the only to come back, it’s believed Girardi will be back next season as well. With Ryan Mcdonagh ready to crack the roster this season, Glen Sather may try to move Wade Redden or Michael Rozsival to make room for Ryan Mcdonagh in the NHL. If the Rangers do choose to get rid of Wade redden than $6.5million would be freed in the salary cap, which the Rangers can use to lure Marc Staal back .No, I’m not saying to pay Marc Staal $6.5mllion, but if you recall contract negotiations between Staal and the Rangers are not going to well, and the extra $$$ may be needed. So that could be one thing for the Rangers organization to think about.

Another thing to think about is how are the Rangers going to rebuild offensively? Glen Sather has said numerous times that he would like to give his top prospects a chance in the NHL, but there are limited spots in the roster for rookies to crack. In fact, there is only 1 spot open for a forward. Who will it be? Grachev, Stepan, Byers, Locke? So many players and only one spot open. Will a move be made to free up more spots? Or will Sather forget about the rebuilding idea, and try to sign a Free Agent that he has reportedly been in many talks with. That player is Alexander Frolov. Pierre Lebrun and Darren Dregar of ESPN have reported that the Rangers have had numerous talks with Russian winger Alexander Frolov, and another player that the Rangers are reportedly in hot pursuit for is veteran Bill Guerin. Many reliable sources have reported that the Rangers are going hard after Bill Guerin. I’m on the fence when it comes to the rebuilding idea, but from what I know overpaying free agents isn’t what rebuilding is all about.

So what will Glen Sather choose to do with the rest of Free Agency? Will he continue down the path of rebuilding, if that's what we are calling it, or will he go out and sign a big time free agent to play with Marian Gaborik? Only time will tell. Thanks for the read.
