Sabres Continue To Be A Huge Free Agency Disappointment
Boy, if this was the "big splash" the Buffalo Sabres were going to make in the National Hockey League free agent market, I guess I believe in the tooth fairy.
What a joke.
It's almost disgusting that the Sabres let defensemen Henrik Tallinder and Toni Lydman skate off into the sunset.

So how does General Manager Darcy Regier counter-act to the loss of Tallinder and Lydman...he's sign an average defenseman in Jordan Leopold from Pittsburgh and re-signs minor leaguer Cody McCormick who scored just 29 points for Portland last season and made a minor ripple when his toughness was needed in the playoffs.
I am sorry but unless Regier has some magic up his sleeve, all I can see is the same boring team with a lot of underachievers. New faces? Nope. Competition for jobs? Nope. Forwards that are too small? Yup.
Underachievers? Sounds like Regier and his player decisions. Very unimpressive to say the least.
I know the free agency market is still young this summer, but there are absolutely no rumblings of any possible negotiations with anyone.
And as far as getting a new backup goalie, it didn't take long for Martin Biron to sign on the dotted line with the New York Rangers. He knew Regier would do his bird act....cheap, cheap.
I guess the good thing thus far is that goalie Patrick Lalime hasn't been signed yet to a new contract. Everyone says Lalime is good in "the room". Who cares? I want someone good "on the ice!"
We've got a stud goalie in Ryan Miller and a top-flight defenseman in Tyler Myers. But losing Tallinder and Lydman weakened the defense as Leopold isn't comparable to either.
Unfortunately it's the wrong time, again, to dump Regier and head coach Lindy Ruff. But the game has passed them by. We need a new aggressive, young general manager and a head coach who needs to figure out the new NHL. Maybe next year.
The 2010-11 season.... Higher ticket prices, lower salaries. Same old Sabres.
