Shane Carwin Vs. Brock Lesnar: It's Finally Here.

Dale De SouzaJul 3, 2010

I said I wasn't going to do one, but I couldn't resist.

This fight is just too good to pass up.

For those who don't know, this is the fight that was supposed to main event a couple of previous UFC cards (106 and 108, I think).

This is all before Brock's diverticulitis.

Months later, Brock has recovered, Shane has healed from his knee surgery and beaten Frank Mir — who is 1-1 against Lesnar, by the way.

Now, it's finally going down.

The man with "a shotgun for a right hand", as a buddy of mine has been saying, now goes up against the Minnesotan with the "hammer fists from Hell".

Both men have knockout power. Both men have experience in Wrestling, and both men share a common opponent on their record.

Seems like anyone's game, right?

For once, I'm going to say it:

You're darned right it is.

Now, I should be the guy who breaks the trend and tells you that Carwin is going to beat Lesnar, but I'm going to take a neutral stance on this one.

After all, a more experienced Randy Couture was beaten by the less-experienced Lesnar at UFC 91.

In twelve fights, Rashad Evans had drawn only to Tito Ortiz, but beaten eleven others before UFC 88, and I don't think I need to explain who or what came falling down at the hands of Rashad.

Rich Franklin rolled into his UFC 64 bout with Anderson Silva with twenty-four bouts on his record — five fights deeper than "The Spider".

See any type of trend here yet?

The aforementioned names above — Couture, Liddell, and Franklin — all came into their fights with more experience than their aforementioned opponents.

They were all also defeated before the end of the third round by their less experienced opponents.

On paper and under the surface, the fact that Carwin is rolling into this fight tonight five fights deeper than Lesnar implies that Lesnar is going up against a more experienced fighter.

That's not the only thing Carwin has going for him.

Don't forget that Carwin's never seen round two in his career, and he's knocked out seven opponents in the cage, including Gabriel Gonzaga and Mir.

Considering that Lesnar's return to the cage is tonight, however, I'd like to think that maybe Lesnar really isn't that worried about Carwin.

As stated before, he's got NCAA wrestling to his credition, and before Carwin, he had the heaviest hands in the UFC.

Not anymore, Brock.

If you don't know what it's like to get hit by one of Carwin's hands, check out this gentleman's 116 predictions.

Scary, right?

Well, nothing about Lesnar makes it easy to sleep at night, either.

What you've got is two scary heavyweights who have finished the majority of their opponents by way of (T)KO, but that also have some sick takedown ability if there ever was such a thing.

The two can finish off any opponent at any time with one ruthless connection of fist-to-face.

They're both considered to be two of the world's best 265-pounders for a reason.

With The Last Emperor dethroned at long last, this fight will crown a new "King of Heavyweights" in MMA, though I still have to say that it'll be a while before Fedor in dethroned as the "pound for pound best heavyweight".

This fight could give us a jump off in that direction, though.

If you ask me, this one is as good as a stalemate, but I'm going to go with Carwin by a TKO.

I'm not saying it'll be a first round finish, but I think Shane will be able to catch Brock.

That's the thing, though — as quickly as I say that, Brock could catch Carwin like he's never been caught before and snap the streak of Greg Jackson's most dangerous heavyweight.

It can go both ways.

"Lesnar beats Carwin". "Carwin beats Lesnar".

Which one will it be?

We'll find out tonight.
