What Has Arsene Wenger Done Wrong?
It baffles me, the cheer ineptitude of the fickle Arsenal fan. You can visit several Arsenal forums, and read their poor excuses for why Arsene Wenger, is somehow become a poor manager. The same Arsene Wenger who is the most successful manager in the history of Arsenal football club, the same man who took us over an entire season unbeaten, won 3 league titles, took us to 2 european finals, won 4 fa cups, 4 community shields, and a league cup final, and we have remained on the forefront of not only domestic football but also european football, failing to reach the quarter-final of the champions league a handful times.
The main complaints that are directed at Wenger is the lack of trophies over the last 5-6 years, which is perfectly understandable considering the wealth of trophies we had during the 1998-2005 period, but the circumstances that we are in dictated a more financially prudent spending habit.
In order to build the new state of the art Emirates Stadium, we had to plunge ourselves into debts passing 400m, and it perplexes me, how fans think that realistically Arsene could go out and buy 30m players. Obviously, as time has gone on, the financial situation has improved, but in my opinion it is quite evident that are financial ability was hampered by the debts.
When we built the stadium there was only two ways Arsenal could go, Up or Down, we could allow the debts of the club to cripple us, or we could let the new stadium help Arsenal become the biggest club in the world, and to ensure the latter happened Arsenal decided to promote youth rather than spend recklessly every summer to appease fickle fans. Some people point out that since we haven't won a trophy in 5 years that "Project Youth" is a failure, may someone please explain that to me? We are still in the Top 4, despite the likes of Tottenham and Manchester City throwing money at getting there, If you take a look at our squad we have some of the finest players in Europe, wanted by many, arguably we have Two of the best fullbacks in Sagna and Clichy, wanted by the likes on Inter Milan and Barcelona
One of the best central midfielders on the planet, in Cesc Fabregas
Despite his injury problems, in my opinion one of the best strikers in Europe Robin Van Persie
Also the guy who lit up Euro 2008 and the UEFA cup and on his day a world class player Andrey Arshavin, and you can look at the various other talented players who are about to make the step up soon, Nasri, Walcott, Bentdner, Vela, Nordveit, Djourou, Song, Diaby et al
What's clear to me and it should also be to the fans is, Wenger cares about the club, beyond just the football team, he cares about the fans and the club itself. Chances are he probably could of spent 30m or 40m, but he is building Arsenal for the future, not just for today. I ask a question to all Arsenal fans, Would you rather be in our position or Man Utd's or Liverpool's?
I know what my answer would be, Man utd have debts spiralling towards the 800million pound mark, and Liverpool are most probably going to have to sell their captain and star striker because simply, they can't afford not too.
When Arsene Wenger said that getting a Champion's League place was the second best domestic trophy, I couldn't agree with him more, would you rather us win the FA Cup or Carling Cup, than make it in the Champion's League? not only is there a financial gain, but also the Champion's League is europe's most premier competition the best sides in Europe play in it, why would a club the size of Arsenal not aim to be in there more than attempting to win a trophy like the Carling Cup? the mind boggles.
To finish I'm not one of those "Arsene Knows Best" fans, but I believe the job that Arsene has done in the years since we built the stadium is remarkable, and lets not forget in the time where we supposedly weren't successful, we did make it too the Carling Cup and Champion's League finals, losing narrowly in both. Arsene adopted a different approach to ensure Arsenal remained competitive on the field but financially stable, and any Arsenal fan who can't see that, must be blind too the obvious.
