UFC 116: A UFC Undisputed 2010 Preview

Vince CareyJun 24, 2010

Due to the tremendous amount of excitement for UFC 116 in a few weeks, the members of my household were unable to wait any longer. Since the fight seemed to be years away, we decided to do the next best thing and let UFC Undisputed 2010 give us our fix.

Highlighting the action was a five round title fight between former WWE Superstar, Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin. Also on our virtual card was the Co-Main event of the evening, featuring Chris “The Crippler” Leben taking on Yoshihiro “Sexiyama” Akiyama.

            Enjoy the X-Box 360 Action.

Yoshihiro Akiyama vs Chris Leben

Round 1: Mario Yamasaki is our referee for our Co-main event of the evening. The two men walk to the center of the octagon and come out swinging with Akiyama getting the better of the exchanges. Akiyama misses an uppercut and pays for it as Leben hits him with a HUGE right/left combination that rocks him. Akiyama, with his senses still intact goes for the takedown and gets it with three minutes left in the round. Akiyama tries to pass to half guard and gets reversed by a nice sweep and Leben is in guard. Leben lets “Sexiyama” stand and starts throwing wild combinations. Yoshihiro seems to stay out of harms way long enough and Leben starts breathing heavy. Akiyama lands a big head kick followed by a quick left hand that causes Leben to grab him. Leben scores a nice take down from the clinch, but Akiyama is able to get to his feet quickly. With just one minute left in the round, both men stand their ground and start throwing haymakers for a solid thirty seconds. Sexiyama takes a step back and delivers a brutal left high kick and the lights go out.

Winner by first round KO (4:24): Yoshihiro Akiyama

 Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin

Round 1: Herb Dean is in charge of making sure there are no accidental homicides in this bout. Carwin runs out and gets underhooks, shooting for a takedown immediately. Lesnar sprawls, catches a Carwin right and throws him to the mat. Brock seems content to stay on top of him (a’ la Jon Fitch) and eventually Carwin gets back to his feet with 2:55 left in the round. Carwin shoots for a quick takedown and gets it, but lets Lesnar back up. Brock goes for three straight takedowns, but Carwin stuffs them all. After 30 seconds of hesitant striking, Lesnar finally succeeds and gets Carwin to the mat. Lesnar is postured up and throws a big shot from guard opening a cut above Carwin’s right eye. Carwin gets it back to the feet and stuffs a Lesnar takedown with a knee that knocks down the champion. Carwin jumps into mount and lands a few weak shots as the round closes. Decent round.

Judges Vince and Sam Carey both score the round 10-9 Carwin.

Round 2: Carwin takes the center of the octagon and throws a nice left hook that opens a nasty cut over the champion’s eye. Brock comes back with a big right of his own followed by a takedown attempt that is stuffed. Carwin throws another shot to the cut and Dean stops the fight to have a doctor look at it. The doctor gives the O.K. and the fight resumes with 3:30 left in the round. Brock comes out and lands a big left hand that knocks down the challenger. He lets Carwin get back to his feet and lands another hard shot, this time a right, and knocks him down again. Lesnar charges and gets into full guard, but Carwin is able to escape back to his feet. Carwin eats a right hand but comes back with a punishing left hook to the temple that leaves Lesnar dreaming on the mat.

Winner by 2nd Round KO (3:01): Shane Carwin.
