An Open Letter To "Whoever" Takes Charge Of Liverpool FC From a Fan

Kaustav BoseJun 24, 2010

Sir, this letter is mainly to voice the concerns of Liverpool FC.

The club has really been through a tough time and as fans of this great club we are really worried about both its immediate and long-term future.

In this respect, there are certain issues that I would like to address. Hopefully you’ll appreciate some of them, as they are mostly based on sentiments and not tactical knowledge.

With all due respect to the club’s management, we are made to believe that after such concerted search they believe you are just the right man for the job, and in all earnestness we support you because that is the “Liverpool Way” of doing things here. We believe that you are aware of all the duties and the responsibilities for the job and the fact that it is going to be a daunting task ahead of you.

However, we hope that you will respect the sentiments of the fans and not really undo the core of the team completely.

What we really mean by that is that not only should the sale of stars like Torres be stalled, but also players in the junior ranks like Raheem Sterling should be kept, as we believe these players are the future of this club.

We also believe that you have made it clear to your employers about the players you think suitable to be bought in to the club.

We hope that you know that the only big errors leveled against during the reign of your predecessor at the club, Rafa Benitez, has been some of his average buys which were basically gamble buys that didn’t click.

That should serve as a guiding principle for you during the transfer market, in the manner that not only on the pitch performance but also transactions are considered very critically in these times of heavy financial constraint.

It should not be unknown to you that a lot of top players around the world have openly stated their desire to play for Liverpool. Without naming anybody, we would like to remind you of their statements and consider them.

We need to have the best talent around if we are to grow as a club. With the laborious N’gog substituting Torres , even after considering the Frenchman's talent, the fall in class is just too great.

Sooner or later it had to make us pay. In cases of such alarming problems of squad building, we expect you to pay due concern and not just splash out any cash on average misfits or injured players, moves that have back-fired so often for our club of late.

We want players who would feel proud to be a part of this giant club and not just from any particular nationality (keeping in mind the Platini rules).

We understand that winning the league or the Europa would be tough because of heavy spending all around. Howeverwe still expect a good fight for the top four at least, considering the club is used to finishing in the top four even with restricted spending as under Rafa Benitez, the manager you are supposed to better.

Therefore, we expect to have a much higher finish in the league and a much better performance from our players, whom you should be able inspire with your massive wealth of experience. Thus, we hope you have a very good idea of these and a lot of other challenges that lay ahead of you, and we expect you to really live up to our expectations.

You may have well been aware of the support that the Liverpool FC fans all over the world lent to Rafael Benitez for the good work he had done for our club, even when he departed. We sure expect you to better all that and be our hero.

It’s a mammoth feat that we are demanding from you, but its only because this great club really deserves that and expectations as such are very likely.

The club has really progressed in the last half of the decade and we expect it to surge further to greater heights in your able hands.

Lastly, its time for the club, the management, and the fans to unite and support the club in these dreaded hours. It is for you to ensure "there is a golden sunshine" at the end of it all.
