Where Could Spezza Go?

Conor HoganJun 21, 2010

So recent rumours have Spezza saying that he 'wouldn't object to a trade over the summer'.  With that being said it lays open the continuous streams of what if's!

So to get everything kick started how 'bout a what if involving the Toronto Maple Leafs and a certain someone.

Before we involve the how and who are we going to trade to acquire him, let's take a look how he would help and fit into our team.

If GM Brian Burke were to trade for Spezza it would almost be the perfect piece that he's looking for.  What is Kessel lacking right now?  A bonafide playmaking center right!

He's right there, the perfect set up man for the perfect sniper.  Just think how good Spezza and Heatly were together.  Well now you'll have the chance for that huge league leading offence right onyour top line,, in Toronto nonetheless!

So what that top line look like?

Well it would probably be something like Stalhberg, Spezza, and Kessel.  Not bad eh!

But now the real stuff begins, how realistic is it for Toronto to acquire him.

To be honest not very.  For starters it would be with a team in their own division a big no no in any sport.  You never trade good players to other teams in your division.  It's like a cardinal rule of sports.

Mind you Burke has already broken that rule on many an occasion along with many a GM and have reaped good benefits from it.  The latest, need I remind you was the Kessel trade with Boston.  We have yet to see how history will look back upon that trade.  Though to date both teams seemed to have won greatly with it.

Secondly it would have to be something sweet.  The only possible trade I can think of that both teams would be happy with is Kaberle, Kulemin, and a 2nd. pick to Ottawa for Spezza, a prospect, and a 1st rd. pick.

What do you think could it happen again two years in a row?
