BREAKING NEWS: Is TNA About To Add a Third Program on Spike?

John ReidJun 19, 2010

It certainly looks that way. According to Dave Meltzer of f4online.com, Spike TV and TNA wrestling are in negotiations to add a third TNA program, Xplosion, to their lineup. For those who may not know, Xplosion is a one hour program that is currently shown on syndicated networks throughout the world. Also, you can find episodes of TNA Xplosion online.

Here's the kicker: it is being reported that they may place Xplosion on Thursday night at 8 p.m., one hour before Impact, with TNA Reaction to follow. I have to say that as much as I enjoy watching TNA that is overkill for one night. Anyone remember when WCW used to have Nitro on TV for three hours? Even more recently than that, when the WWE had their three hour specials for Monday Night Raw?

Dedication to two hours is all ready a challenge for people who are busy. I can't even imagine sitting down on a Thursday night (especially when the fall TV lineups resume) to watch wrestling for four hours. For starters, my fiancee will question my sanity, and two, I would do the exact same thing.

That said, I think having Xplosion is a long overdue idea for TNA, especially if they plan on doing away with monthly PPVs and having more live shows. TNA has talent in abundance that doesn't get the chance to shine on Impact because there's only so much they can fit in a two-hour time frame, so this will give them a chance to display their talents.

Xplosion will give TNA the opportunity to showcase two championship divisions that have been sorely underused: the Global championship and the Knockouts Tag Team Division. The Global Championship hasn't been seen in weeks since Rob Terry was injured, and TNA does need to establish that division for their secondary stars such as Desmond Wolfe and The Pope when he returns. Fans would watch if these guys were headlining the show and they had title matches each week.

Also, this will give the Knockouts Tag Division some more opportunity to grow. The Beautiful People really have no other challengers other than Sarita & Taylor Wilde, and they would get more time on TV while they rebuild the entire Knockouts division.

As for Impact, it would give them the opportunity to highlight the major feuds: X Division, Tag Team, Knockouts Title, and the World Title. They can give matches more time the way the WWE does with Smackdown.

I do think that they should move the program to a different night, such as Saturday evenings. I know the cynical fan thinks there are all ready too many wrestling programs now, but remember with NXT possibly going away and WWE Superstars being pretty much a throwaway program, there would be four major wrestling shows on TV:

Monday-Raw (ROH as well for those who have HDNet)

Thursday-Impact followed by Reaction

Friday-Smackdown

Saturday-Xplosion

I think that Xplosion on Spike TV would be a great idea if it happens. Now only if they can hire someone to market it to the casual fan...
