BREAKING NEWS: Is TNA Dropping PPVs?

John ReidJun 14, 2010

For days people were wondering what the big surprise was going to be from TNA President Dixie Carter. Some speculated that Paul Heyman would be the head booker, others thought that former ECW star Tommy Dreamer appearing at last night's Slammiversary was the big surprise.

Well, according to PWInsider, the latest rumor is that Carter met with Spike TV's Kevin Kay, and that TNA will drop PPVs and focus on developing live specials on TV.

This was Carter's most recent tweet: Just got off phone w/Spike prez Kevin Kay. He is all in and agrees this will change TNA on every level.

If this is true, it's a great idea for TNA. They need to establish their brand on TV if they truly want to be the alternative to WWE. Perhaps this will mean they will bring back one of the old NWA shows like Clash of the Champions, which was one of TBS' highest rated programs. In addition, this will allow them to have a special program dedicated to their X-Division and Knockouts Division, two staples that used to be the highlights of TNA programming.

Going live will also produce the "anything can happen" programming that keeps viewers watching. Think about last week's Raw and how it ended with the attack of the NXT rookies on John Cena. NO ONE saw that coming, and if TNA can produce that kind of programming, we're watching.

That said, I think dropping PPVs right now is a good thing, especially in an economy that forces people to change how they spend their discretionary income carefully. TNA has not established themselves to the point where people can afford watching their PPVs as well as the WWE's and in some cases UFC's.

My only hope is that this will mean they will make their programming on TV easier to follow. The past two weeks have been great shows with more emphasis on wrestling and building up better story lines.

More information to come on this breaking story as it follows.
