Dixie Carter Really Couldn't Sleep Over This?
The secret is out everyone. TNA promised a surprise for Slammiversary and they gave us one. Though regrettably, one that very few of us actually want.
Tommy Dreamer
That's right, the heart and soul of ECW has entered the building. Dixie made sure to clarify that Paul Heyman has not joined TNA. Which brings the question, what is Dreamer doing here?
I wrote an article begging TNA not to sign Dreamer last December (link posted at the bottom of the page). They gave me six months which was nice but they brought Dreamer in any way. I shutter to think what will come next.
There are plenty of ECW originals in TNA. Team 3D and RVD are regulars and Dr. Stevie and Raven are lurking around somewhere (did anyone check the rafters). There's definitely a possibility that an ECW themed faction could arise.
WWE owns the rights to the ECW name so this means that there will be some sort of generic name for this faction should it occur. This didn't stop The Band and I doubt that it will stop them.
I don't know for sure whether or not Dreamer will form an ECW faction. I don't really know why else he would come here.
Tommy Dreamer is less than a year older than Rob Van Dam, which is actually fairly shocking. I've heard that he's performed well on independent shows but if he's anything like he was during his last few months in WWECW, this is not a guy TNA needs.
Quite frankly Dreamer isn't a guy TNA needs even if he is in shape. TNA doesn't need more has beens, or young wrestlers for that matter. The roster is stacked. NO MORE WRESTLERS.
For the record, I like Tommy. He has as much legitimate passion as anyone in the business. He was great in his bit role on WWECW. He's just not worthy of a "big surprise" type label. If anything Tommy should be back stage for I can only hope that Heyman's talents have rubbed off on him. We already have Jeff Jarrett screwing around in the ring, we need wrestlers who can perform.
TNA needs to stop recreating the past. No more Nasty Boys, WCW story lines, and certainly no ECW factions.
ECW was a magical time in wrestling. WWE already screwed with it's legacy.
TNA, please don't follow suit.
