Power Ranking the Majors: Which Event Has the Best Fan Experience?

Bob WarjaJun 13, 2010

While the Masters may be best known for Tiger Wood's crowning achievements, it is the PGA Championship that offers the golf fan their best experience.

First of all, the PGA venue is different each time. This year, the site of the 92nd PGA Championship will be at the Whistling Straits in Haven, Wisconsin.

In 2011, it will be held in Georgia, 2012 will be in South Carolina, 2013 in New York, and 2014 is in Kentucky.

This affords the golf fan a chance to possibly attend a major event no matter where they live in the United States.

The only criticism of the PGA is that it is held in the heat and humidity of August, which may be considered by some to be a disadvantage.

But really, as a fan standing around and watching golf, how bad is the heat going to affect you? In fact, many love summer, and August may be the greatest month of summer.

Just make sure you have plenty of water and you should be fine.

The PGA Championship is also the only one of the four majors to invite all winners of PGA Tour events in the year preceding the tournament.

Amateur golfers would not normally be featured in the PGA, unless their success in other events had lifted them high enough in the world rankings (there is no qualifying section open to amateurs) or by winning one of the other major championships (allowing an amateur to play every major championship for the remainder of the year plus 5 years after the win).

Another cool thing about the PGA is its distinction as the season's final major, which is why it is nicknamed "Glory's last shot."

Each year, the PGA Championship brings the best field of professional golfers of any major championship.

The practice rounds are a lot of fun because photos are allowed during these days; the players are more relaxed and they often sign autographs.

This year, fans can also experience the new PGA Town Center without a ticket, and enjoy interactive experiences, retail stores, food, and beverages.

The Skyboxes enhance the on-course experience, allowing fans to be right in the action, on course, in luxury boxes with food and beverage, with televisions and reserved seating.

Whistling Straits also has reserved seating on the 18th hole, which ensures a fan will have a reserved seat to watch the action on the final hole each day.

Another bonus is that, as part of the PGA's commitment to growing the game, it will continue a program it began last year, admitting fans 17 and younger for free if they accompany an adult ticket holder.

This is great for both fans and the PGA because one ticket holder can bring up to four youth fans.

But what if you can't make it to the event live? No problem.

Television coverage will be provided in the United States by CBS and TNT, and in the United Kingdom by Sky Sports.

Meanwhile, the 2010 field will include all former PGA champions, the last five US Open, Masters, and British Open champions, and the current PGA champion (Tom Lehman), among others.

Plus, who can forget the 2009 PGA Championship, when, in an upset of truly enormous proportions, Y.E. Yang won his first major at Hazeltine National Golf Club.

The nature of the upset wasn't merely that Yang bested the favorite, Tiger Woods, but how the win happened on the final round, with Tiger leading from the previous 54 holes.

Previously, Woods' record for wins after leading going into the final round was perfect. Another win in Chaksa seemed like a foregone conclusion, but Yang pulled ahead with an eagle on the 14th and never gave up the lead.

All these reasons are why, despite the heat, the PGA offers the best fan experience of golf's major events.

Look, if you can't stand the heat, stay off the fairway.
