Cleveland Browns Minicamp: Eric Mangini Running a Tight Ship

Brian DiTullioJun 12, 2010

Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini is hoping to continue the team's recent legacy of finding diamonds in the rough.

After Phil Savage and Romeo Crennell discovered Joshua Cribbs a few years ago, Mangini now has his coaching eye on undrafted rookie wide receiver Johnathan Haggerty.

Haggerty, out of Southwestern Oklahoma State, signed with the Browns after the draft and, according to this article from Cleveland's The Plain Dealer , has been catching just about everything to come his way.

Never underestimate the coach who has good talent evaluation skills because that guy will find the diamonds in the rough. As Mangini's skills as a coach develop, so do the Browns' chances of finally breaking out and becoming a dominant team.

Besides the unwanted drama of three restricted free agents not participating, the Browns minicamp has been free of negativity and, thankfully, major injuries.

The only mar on the surface of the minicamp was rookie defensive end Clifton Geathers starting a fight with some offensive lineman.

Mangini said he shut that fight down immediately, and then spoke to everyone about controlling their emotions.

Looking ahead to training camp, it's difficult to say what will happen. The coaches certainly have a better grasp of what their rookies will be able to do, and are getting a sense of where the offseason veteran pickups will fit into the game plan.

Other than that, it's now a matter of waiting until the first preseason game to see who "gets it," and who is in over their head.
