New Orleans Saints Drew Brees and Sean Payton Deal With BP Oil Spill

Lauren HerroldJun 8, 2010

Who Dat Nation has been through a lot in the past few years with Hurricane Katrina and now the infamous BP Oil Spill.

The New Orleans Saints decided to help out and take the community’s mind off what’s going on for a few hours. Coach Sean Payton and quarterback Drew Brees signed autographs for their adoring fans and served as a great distraction from the mess of the oil spill.

The Super-Bowl winning coach, QB, and team owner, Tom Benson, passed out “Who Dat?” banners in Plaquemines Parish, raising the spirits of the community.

In addition to the meet and greet, Brees announced that they’ll be auctioning off a Super Bowl ring like those that the team will soon be sporting.  The lucky winner will find out before the Sept. 9 game against Minnesota. Fans must make a minimum $10 order at $2  per ticket with all the proceeds benefiting victims of the oil spill.

The oil spill has been devastating for the environment and the local economy. No one knows how long the effects of this spill will be felt.

It’s a shame more athletes can’t take time out of their schedules to help the people that are there to cheer for them every game. They’re fortunate to make a killing playing in a couple games a year. They should start utilizing their celebrity statuses by setting examples and helping out the people in the country that makes them so fortunate.

Hopefully with Drew Brees as an example more players will step up and help out the community drowning in oil.
