Clinton Portis Will Be Back In 2010...With a Vengeance

Will WalkerMay 31, 2010

In 2009, star Redskins HB Clinton Portis had a highly disappointing season. The star Redskins HB ran for barely over 400 yards. The Skins had a disaster 5-11 season, and many people were convinced Portis was becoming too old and banged up to remain a starting half back. I am not one of those people.

This is not an unfamiliar situation for Clinton Portis. In 2004, the year Portis was traded from the Broncos to the Redskins, Portis had a terrible year. He only ran for 5 TD's. People like you were wondering if Portis was too "banged up" and "overrated" to be a factor anymore. The next season, Portis had 11 TD's and took the Skins to the playoffs with a 10-6 record. In 2006, Portis had an even worse year. He ran for only 523 rushing yards and 7 TD's. The next year, Portis runs for 1,262 yards and 11 TD's.

What I don't understand is why people keep saying he is "too old". He is only 29! In the NFL Street game that I own, he is a rookie! As long as you are below your 30's, even by one year, no one should consider you too old, except people looking for an excuse. Look at Peyton Manning! He is 31 years old, and no Colts fan is complaining about his age!

However, most Skins fans might ask "Why are you so confident that this year will be Portis's year?" Simple. Washington has my 4th best projected QB in the NFL named Donavan McNabb. Now that we have a quarterback, that takes some pressure of the running game. In addition, the Skins won't be pressured to run run run the ball all the time, like they had to when the INT-Machine Jason Campbell was quarterback.

In addition, Shannahan is putting more pressure on Portis to succeed, which will make Portis try all the harder to preform. Shannahan signed Willie Parker and Larry Johnson, and made a clear message to Portis saying that if he doesn't preform, he's food, and will be buried on the depth chart.

When you put all the pieces together, you come to the understanding that Portis will have a great comeback year in 2010.
