Don't Expect To See LenDale White In a Cleveland Browns Uniform

Brian DiTullioMay 29, 2010

The Seattle Seahawks released running back LenDale White on Friday, in a move that came as a bit of a surprise.

White has spent five years in the league with the Tennessee Titans. White was acquired by the Seahawks in a draft day trade and reunited with his former college coach Pete Carroll.

With the 2,000-yard rushing season by Chris Johnson in Tennessee, White was an expendable player on the Titan's roster. It didn't help his perception around the team and the league was one of entitlement and arrogance.

White had 64 carries for 222 yards last year with two touchdowns. That averages out to 3.5 yards per carry, which isn't bad, but the overall numbers point to White being a role player, not a featured back.

To add a new wrinkle to this story, White may be facing a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy, according to NFL.com. But the report doesn't have any more details on that issue.

The Seahawks didn't say much about the release, only noting White "wasn't ready to be a Seahawk" in their statement to the press.

So how does this concern the Browns?

Team President Mike Holmgren wants a "big pile" of running backs, and when one comes on the market you naturally have to look that player over and wonder if he'll fit on the Browns.

The answer to that is "no."

Even if the report about a drug suspension ends up not panning out, the attitude problems White reportedly exhibited in Tennessee most likely would keep him off the team anyway.

Then there's Montario Hardesty and Jerome Harrison.

With second-round pick Hardesty and Harrison on the club, as well as Chris Jennings, James Davis, and Joshua Cribbs, what would the team do with White? Everything else being equal, the "pile" of running backs Holmgren has right now is a good pile to start training camp with.

White will land somewhere, but you can cross Cleveland off that list of potential suitors.
