England V Bangladesh Cricket, Day Two: Iqbal and Imrul Kayes Frustrate the Hosts

Will TurnerMay 28, 2010

Bangladesh made a solid start to their first innings to cap off a frustrating day for England as they failed to capitalise after dominating day one of the opening test match.

England managed to add only 143 runs to their overnight score, all out for 505. Jonathan Trott, continuing on 175, ensued their was to be no personal heartbreak playing patiently to notch up his first test match double hundred.

The innings quickly petered out in spite of Graeme Swann’s best efforts smashing a quick fire 22 with two sixes; Trott out for 226.

Shahadat Hossain ended with a deserved 5-98 becoming the first Bangladeshi bowler on the Lord’s honours board. A fantastic effort from the 23-year-old who bowled with good pace throughout.

It soon became apparent that the taking of Bangladeshi wickets would not be the formality expected by the Lord’s crowd. The explosive Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes played positively, pouncing on any width from the England seamers racing to 67-0 at tea.

Kevin Pietersen was luckily on hand to end a partnership that was beginning to embarrass the hosts, running out Iqbal with a direct hit from the gully for 55. The run looked a crazy one, bringing an unfortunate end to a fine innings.

The anticipated flurry of wickets did not however come, Siddique giving good support to Kayes. Bresnan, Anderson, and Finn all failing to cause consistent problems for the batsmen.

Finn did gain the wicket of Kayes before the close with a nasty ball that bounced off a length, leaving the batsman no choice but to fend to Strauss at slip.

Rain is expected tomorrow so England will need to pounce on any play possible to make inroads into the Bangladesh order.
