Once Brett Favre Decides to Return, Picking Him is Fantasy Football Gold

Last week, I finished up my first draft of the season. I participated in a World Championships of Fantasy Football Satellite League.

Some were concerned about drafting this early, but I was not. I knew there were some great values available if you were able to read between the lines on some situations and take some gambles.

In round 10 of that draft, I did just that. I snagged Brett Favre. With Brett choosing to have surgery last Friday, it's looking more and more like he'll be back.

My thought process at the time of this pick: There were a few guys I had my eye on this round. Flacco and LJ went before my pick so Favre was the obvious selection.

The usual speculation about whether or not Favre will return is upon us, but as usual I’m not buying it; especially since he was one game away from the Super Bowl, and lost to the eventual Super Bowl Champs in a turnover-laden game that his team probably would have won had they not been so careless with the ball.

Some of you may or may not know this, but I don’t really like Favre. It’s nothing personal, he’s probably a nice dude. I just don’t like how he pulls this crap every offseason—which I’m sure most you are tired of also.

Additionally, Bret has cost my beloved 49ers at least two more titles and stifled their last season on that lucky ass play in week three. To say the least, I have a little disdain towards Favre.

However, from a fantasy perspective, he was a stud last year. I drafted him in one league but ended up trading him before the season started in a move I regretted the entire season—I traded Favre and Addai for Anthony Gonzalez and Darren Sproles, cost me a trip to the playoffs and possibly a fantasy title.

With this in mind, this move is a win-win situation for me. If Favre returns, like I think he will, then I got him at a great value—I currently have Favre ranked at seven for QBs.

Once his return is confirmed, he’ll likely be a 6th round pick.

If Favre retires, well then I’ll finally get to bid my arch-nemesis adieu, which is something I’ve been waiting about five years to do.

Right now the Favre stock is at its lowest price for the year, but I feel like he’s worth the risk here. If he comes back, this pick is money; if he doesn’t, well then it didn’t cost me much. This late in the draft, I don’t have problem taking a calculated risk. As my man Mark Cuban would say: “no balls, no babies.”
