HP Byron Nelson Championship: Following Jordan Spieth's Final Round
Most of the fans got a chance to sleep in today and they have a young amateur to thank for that. Because of him, they got a few more hours in the their bed before they got up to get ready to come out here to today's final round of the HP Byron Nelson Championship.
But they won't just come two by two, they'll come in droves and they'll pack each and every hole this young kid plays. So much so that you'll think it's Tiger Woods they're watching, but that's where the comparisons should come to stop.
The young kid I'm referring to, and yes he's still a kid, is young 16-year old high school junior Jordan Spieth from Jesuit College Prep High School right here in Dallas. He's playing on a sponsor's exemption and he's making the most of his time here.
It's one thing to play for the oldest competitor in the HP Byron Nelson Championship in Tom Pernice Jr but it's quite another to play with the Ryder Cup Captain Cory Pavin. No pressure right?
Both got off the first tee at just a few minutes before noon on this very humid, but cloud covered, Sunday afternoon here in Dallas, Texas and both missed the fairway on the left side. Spieth was first up on the tee box and the roar from the gallery was almost deafening.
Once the ball was off the club of the young 16-year old you could tell he didn't like it, turning his back almost immediately and walking back to his caddy to hand him his club. He would land his second shot in the middle of the green and would two putt for par to stay at six-under par after his first hole of the final round.
12:10pm CDT -Spieth is off the tee on the par three second hole but landed it in the greenside bunker on the left side. Not where he wants to be and that is going to be a tough up and down for par.
12:13pm CDT - Good out from the sand to within about 10 feet but it's still going to be a tough par putt to stay at six-under. He needs this par save to not lose the momentum he finished with yesterday.
12:16pm CDT - Spieth misses his par putt to the right and knew it as soon as it left the club. He'll finish with a bogey on the second hole to drop him back to five-under par for the championship and one over today.
12:17pm CDT - Ryder Cup captin Cory Pavin and young Jordan Spieth will head to the par four, 528 yard, third hole.
12:23pm CDT - Not a good start to Sieth's day, he lands his tee shot in the water and had to take a drop. He comes off that shot and lands his second shot on the green and has a shot at a par save but will need a perfect putt from about 20 feet.
12:25pm CDT - This third hole is the hardest on the golf course with water along the entire right side of the hole up until about 50-60 yards before the green. With the wind blowing left to right, it caught Jordan Spieth's ball and pushed it into the water. That wind is going to be a big factor today.
12:28pm CDT - Another bogey for Jordan Spieth and that's back-to-back bogey's for his day. Drops him back to four-under par for the championship and two over for the day. Tough start for the kid.
12:35pm CDT - Hole number four is a 431-yard par four and, once again, Jordan misses the fairway into the fairway bunker. He can't keep doing this and think he's going to play very well.
12:38pm CDT - Spieth goes from tied for seventh to start his day to tied for 18th. That gallery that is six rows deep is going to dwindle if he continues to struggle.
12:39pm CDT - He misses the green at four to the left and will have a long chip shot for his third.
12:41pm CDT - His chip lands to within five feet and saves par on the fourth and will head to the 174-yard par three at two over par for his day.
12:49pm CDT - Make it three bogeys in his first five holes. Spieth missed the green off the tee on the par three fifth. Three over for the day and he's back to three under for the tournament.
12:51pm CDT - Correction on above information, he parred the fifth hole and is still four under par for the tournament.
1:00pm CDT - Jordan finds the fairway, finally, on the 448-yard par four sixth hole. He hasn't hit many fairways this week but maybe this is a sign of good things to come.
1:05pm CDT - Spieth's second shot lands to within about 15 feet and he'll have that left for birdie to get a shot back. He needs this birdie in a big way.
1:08pm CDT - Jordan couldn't quite land his birdie putt so he'll settle for a par to keep him at two over for the day and four under for the tournament.
1:15pm CDT - Another missed fairway for Spieth on the on the par five seventh hole.
1:20pm CDT - I'm not sure if Jordan is trying to swing the club too hard off the tee and overpower the wind that's blowing out here or if his concentration just isn't there but he doesn't look near as confident as he did yesterday.
1:26pm CDT - Jordan's second shot landed on the left side rough about 75 yards short of the green but he had a nice third shot to within 10 feet of the pin and he'll have that left for his birdie.
1:30pm CDT - A nice birdie putt from Jordan Spieth and he's back to five under for the tournament and one over for the day. That's exactly what he needed to get his confidence back.
1:36pm CDT - Spieth follows up a birdie on seven with a nice drive on the 461-yard par four, landing it on the fairway up the left side.
1:40pm CDT - Jordan landed his second shot on the green but it didn't hold, rolling to the back of the green on the right side. He's got another 30 to 35 feet left to the pin.
1:42pm CDT - Another par for Spieth on the par four eighth hole and he'll head to the 427-yard par four ninth hole. This hasn't been the kind of day that Jordan was hoping for but you have to give the kid credit for the great three rounds he's had thus far.
2pm CDT - Another birdie for young Jordan Spieth on the par four ninth hole. A good way to finish his front nine. He's back to even par and six under for the tournament.
2:01pm CDT - Here's a good way to start his back nine, a 342-yard drive off the tee on the 435-yard par four tenth hole.
2:07pm CDT - Great second shot from Jordan to within about 8 feet and he'll have that left for birdie. Too bad he didn't have this kind of game on the front nine or he might have been able to make a serious run.
2:10pm CDT - A great birdie for Jordan Spieth and he goes back to even par for the day and six under for the tournament, exactly where he finished yesterday.
2:13pm CDT - Don't look now but Australian Jason Day has begun to struggle and only has a one shot lead. He bogeyed the easiest hole on the golf course and followed that up by landing his tee shot on eight into the fairway bunker.
2:15pm CDT - Another correction, Jordan Spieth is seven under for the tournament and one under for his day. Ladies and gentlemen, he's just four shots back with eight holes to play. This is still very possible.
2:18pm CDT - I know this is supposed to be about Jordan Spieth but Jason Day punched out of the bunker and had about 100 yards left and missed the green with his third shot. Could the wheels be falling off for Jason Day?
2:20pm CDT - Great drive from Jordan Spieth on the par four 11th hole and landed it just short of the fairway bunker. Could Jordan make a run at the title? If he puts together a stretch of birdies, it's not out of the realm of possibility.
2:22pm CDT - Back-to-back bogeys for Jason Day and he's back to ten under for the tournament.
2:29pm CDT - Beautiful second shot from Jordan Spieth just inside Cory Pavin's ball and he's within about 12 feet for birdie.
2:30pm CDT - Even after Pavin gave him a free look at the line on his birdie putt, Spieth still missed his birdie putt to the right and will tap in for par to remain at one under for his day and seven under for the tournament. That was a putt that really would have given Spieth a big boost of confidence.
2:34pm CDT - Jordan finds the rough down the right side of the fairway and will have about 125 yards left for his second shot to the green.
2:40pm CDT - Not a great second shot by Jordan leaves him about 40 feet for birdie.
2:42pm CDT - Didn't play his line right on his putt leaves him about four feet for par but it's not an easy four feet by any stretch.
2:43pm CDT - Good putt by Spieth right at the center of the cup and he stays three back of the leaders. He's at seven under for the tournament and one under on his day.
2:47pm CDT - Spieth will head up to the 180-yard par three 13th hole. This is a hole that could be big for the young 16-year old if he's going to make a serious run at the leaders.
2:48pm CDT - Well, there went that thought. Jordan came up well short of the green on the left side and it bounced into the greenside bunker. He's showing his age and inexperience a little bit because this should have been a hole where he could take advantage of where he's at in this tournament.
2:51pm CDT - Not a great shot out of the bunker and will have a tough par putt to stay three back of the leaders.
2:52pm CDT - Blake Adams takes the lead for the first time at 11-under par and is one shot ahead of Jason Day.
2:53pm CDT - Disappointing bogey for Jordan Spieth on 13 and he falls five back of Blake Adams who's at 11-under. That's what happens when you miss the green off the tee especially on a par three.
3:05pm CDT - Jordan comes up short of the green on his second shot at 14 and, once again, a missed opportunity.
3:06pm CDT - What a shot by Jordan Spieth who just missed a birdie chip by about an inch or two off the right edge of the cup. He'll tap in for par and stay at six under par for the tournament and even par for the day.
3:14pm CDT - Spieth misses the fairway on the left side and finds the rough. He'll have about 180 yards left to the green for his second shot. It's now or never for Jordan if he hopes to make any sort of move.
3:16pm CDT - Jordan has a tough second shot coming up because he has a line of trees right in front of him. He punched it out and into the fairway which will leave him about 60-70 yards to the green and he'll need to get up and down for par.
3:21pm CDT - Jordan Spieth's third shot and he doesn't like it and rightly so. He missed the green to the right. You have to wonder what's going through his mind right now because he has to know that he could have made a serious run to the top.
3:23pm CDT - Jordan's chip shot and he hit it fat and it's still not on the green and he's disgusted with himself.
3:25pm CDT - A double bogey for Jordan Spieth and he falls back to one over par for his day and four under for the tournament. Unfortunate turn of events for the young 16-year old.
3:32pm CDT - Jordan Spieth has three holes to play and even though he's coming off a double bogey at 15, he needs to feel good with making the cut and playing as well as he's played all week long. He's going to be a name to remember down the line.
3:35pm CDT - Jordan Spieth finds the fairway down the right side on the 504-yard par five 16th hole.
3:39pm CDT - Coming up just short of the green with a nice second shot and he'll have a short chip to the green. If he can put it close, he can give himself a nice chance at birdie.
3:46pm CDT - Beautiful chip from Jordan and he's within six feet. He'll have that left for birdie.
3:49pm CDT - Nice birdie putt from Jordan Spieth and he'll move back to five under for the tournament.
4:02pm CDT - After a great tee shot at the par three 17th, Spieth just missed his birdie putt off the right edge and he'll finish with a par as he heads to the final hole.
4:05pm CDT - Spieth absolutely rips his driver but sends it into the gallery up the right side of the fairway. I guess since he started his day in the rough he may as well end it in the rough. At least he's consistant.
4:11pm CDT - Someone has forgotten to tell Jordan Spieth that he's not in the MLB All-Star homerun derby because he absolutely launched his second shot at 18 and it sails not only the green but the gallery sitting on the other side.
4:14pm CDT - A great chip from Spieth onto the green and he'll have about 12 to 15 feet for par to finish his day at five under par.
4:17pm CDT - If Spieth can land this par putt on 18, he'll finish at 13th place and all things considered that's a great finish for this young man.
4:19pm CDT - Jordan Spieth finishes his day with a bogey to finish at two over par for his day and a four under par finish for the tournament. Regardless of a tough couple of holes today that's a big accomplishment to not only make the cut but to be within striking range of the leaders late in the day.
We'll see him again in early June in Memphis, Tennessee as he'll be playing in the St. Jude Classic under a sponsor's exemption so I'm sure golf fans out there will want to buy up tickets to see this young man play.
I'm sure the University of Texas is looking forward to this young man coming to play for their golf team as Spieth is already committed to them. Though it's only a verbal committment, there are some that say he could very well turn pro out of high school if he plays in another tournaments but there are others, myself included, that say he should go to college and gain that much more experience before trying to take on the big boys.
There aren't very many courses that play like the Byron Nelson and are as open as this course. He would be eaten up by tighter courses around the PGA Tour so Spieth has a long ways to go before he tries to take on the PGA Tour.
There are great things ahead for this 16-year old including his senior year at Jesuit College Prep High School and a promising career at the University of Texas.
