Why England Will Not Win the World Cup

Mehdi MustunMay 23, 2010

Many England fans will tell you England are right up there with the best. The Fifa ranking puts them as the eighth best team in the world. The bookies put them as third favorite team to win the World Cup, behind Brazil and Spain. Every year, same story.

This campaign and manager Fabio Capello has been given the job which any manager would take with ease. A team which includes some of the best players in the world, including the likes of Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, and Ashley Cole. However these names do not bring success.

The last time England lifted a trophy was 1966. That tells you a story or two. Each time England come through tough and face a team which stops them carrying out their un-destined path. For England, it's been teams like Portugal and Brazil which send them home in tears.

This year, it's the same story. Their Qualifying Campaign has been more than expected with nine wins out of 10. However their friendly matches tell a different story; losing games to France, Brazil, and Spain.

The Nation always expect them to win the World Cup. Why? Even I don't know. They have a solid team but against high ranked teams they fail to show what they do against the small teams. They start to lose the flow and smoothness which they are capable off. They fail to come up with new plans and repeat their tactics again and again.

They are able to finish of a little team five or six nil, however I can name five teams which can easily get through England in 90 minutes. In the World cup I see them winning their group, however a tough encounter with USA awaits them. Don't be quick to underestimate Algeria, a team who beat Egypt in two games to get to South Africa.

In the latter stages of the World Cup, they can face teams like France, Brazil, Spain, Germany, and Argentina. The five teams which I was thinking of. I fear England get to ahead of themselves and glory get to their heads to early. The passion for the game takes over their brains and hearts and their play gets distracted.

This year, I really do think it will be the same story, as many of the big teams are getting even better. I think they will ease past the group stage, however each time they get through a round, they have less chance of winning. Only a true miracle can get them to win in South Africa.
