Theo Walcott: Keep Him Or Leave Him?

Jia HaoMay 23, 2010

Theo Walcott, the young prodigy that got most, or not every, arsenal fan excited when he first arrived at arsenal back in 2006. Arsenal fought hard for the 16-years-old's signature back then, fending off Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham for the talented winger. Walcott transferred to Arsenal on 20 January 2006, for a fee of £5 million, rising to £12 million depending on appearances for club and country, at the time this was a record fee for a teenager. He was even surprisingly and controversially selected for the England squad for the World Cup 2006. Fast forward to present day, was all that money spent worth? Is the "future world-player-of-the-year" even good enough to don the arsenal jersey?

There's no doubt that this lad has talent. He has terrifying pace and has a good eye for goal. The game of England against Croatia was a perfect example, using his pace and precision to complete his first hat-trick at the international level, also making him the youngest englishmen to complete a hat-trick for his country.

however, many question if walcott is good enough. too many times has he made the wrong discisions during the game; poor passing and reading of the game. Walcott uses his god given speed to get pass his defenders, but too often has that been for nothing as he is unable to deliver a good cross from the wing. He relies too much on his speed and does not use much tricks to dribble past right-backs. Perhaps the striker role really does suit him better.

I have recently came across an article where Juventus are interested in buying Walcott. Should Arsene let him go? Should Arsene spare fans the agony of watching a winger that can't cross a ball into the box? I feel that Walcott should stay at Arsenal for another season or two. But if he is unable to live up to expectations, then he really must go.

Walcott ought to dedicate more time in improving his reading of the game, passing and crossing. When Adebayor first came to Arsenal, I felt that all he could do was head the ball. But the magical Arsene Wenger transformed him into a African Player of The Year, into a striker that defenders fear. Maybe Arsene would turn Walcott into a player with all the attributes of both a winger and striker, maybe even the future world player of the year. Only time will tell.
