2010 Major League Baseball Rookie Update

Jason Heyward is the best rookie in the major leagues hitting nine home runs and driving in 33 runs while batting .290 and slugging .580.

Top American League Rookies

Batting

Austin Jackson, Tigers  leads in batting average among AL rookies with at least 100 at bats with a .337 average. He also leads in stolen bases with six.

Brennan Boesch, Tigers leads AL rookies in home runs being tied with Justin Smoak with four each and is sole leader in RBI with 22. Boesch is hitting .352 which would lead if he had enough at bats to be qualified, but Jackson is the only rookie with enough at bats. Boesch also leads in extra base hits with 11.

Pitching

Mitch Talbot, Indians leads AL rookies in wins with five with Wade next with four.

Alex Burnett, Twins leads in ERA among rookies with at least 20 innings with a 2.86 mark, while Neftali Perez is second with an ERA of 3.22.

Brian Matusz, Orioles leads in strikeouts with 41 with Wade Davis next with 34.

Neftali Perez, Rangers leads in saves with 12 while Alfredo Simon, Orioles is next with six.

Top National League Rookies

Batting

David Freese, Cardinals leads NL rookies in hitting with a .303 average with Jason Heyward, Braves next with a .290 mark.

Jason Heyward leads in home runs with nine and Tyler Colvin, Cubs, Gaby Sanchez, Marlins and Ike Davis are tied for second with four each.

Heyward also leads in RBI with 33 to 26 for David Freese. Heyward leads in extra base hits with 19 with David Freese next with 14.

Pitching

Jaime Garcia, Cardinals and Mike Leake, Reds lead all NL rookies with four wins each. John Ely, Dodgers, Luis Atlilano, Nationals, and Hisanori Takahashi are second with three wins each.

Garcia also leads in ERA with a 1.28 mark with Carlos Monasterios second among pitchers with at least 20 innings with a 1.90 ERA.

In addition, Garcia also leads in strikeouts with 42 while Leake has 39.

Tim Wood, Marlins has posted the only save by a rookie pitcher in the NL with one save.

Current NL Rookie of the Year Choice: Jason Heyward with a very thin lead over Jaime Garcia. Heyward’s hitting in the clutch and game winning hits gives him the edge. However Garcia is close enough to win it if he keeps pitching like he has all season.
