Haden Island? Browns CB Joe Haden Could Be Eric Mangini's Future Darrelle Revis

Daniel WolfMay 21, 2010

New Cleveland Browns cornerback Joe Haden was drafted in the first round to help reinforce a defensive secondary that has been more than porous over the past few years.

Haden may not start in 2010, unless he can beat out current starter Eric Wright, but never say never when it comes to competition in the NFL because it brings out the best in players.

Back in 2007, when Browns' head coach Eric Mangini was coaching the New York Jets, cornerback Darrelle Revis was drafted in the first round to help rebuild the Jets' secondary, and three seasons later Revis is one of the top cover corners in the NFL today.

Now this is just a loose comparison between a rookie and a two-time Pro Bowler, but Haden's future looks to be bright since his scouting reports coming into the NFL are very similar to the ones that Revis had coming into the NFL as well.

Both are comparable in size with Revis measuring up at 5'11", 198 pounds according to the Jets' official site and Haden is 5'11", 193 pounds according to the Browns' official site.

Knocks on both when they came into the NFL were their size and lack of top-end speed.

Both were also considered very physical coverage guys who are very aggressive and could keep up with their receiver counterparts despite not being the fastest corners in their respective draft classes.

Mangini helped groom Revis in two years with the Jets, and last season Revis broke out to become one of the best.

Revis didn't have too long to learn the NFL system and game speed since he was immediately inserted into the starting lineup on day one.

Haden will actually have the benefit of competing for a starting job and getting mentored by veteran cornerback Sheldon Brown, who has reportedly already started teaching Haden the pro game just as Brown was as a rookie with the Eagles.

Even though Haden may not break into the starting lineup in 2010 he will be the primary nickelback.

Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan did use three cornerback sets in nearly half of all the defensive plays that were called in the 2009 season.

Brown, Wright, and Haden are a solid combo going into the 2010 season, and with a veteran on board to teach both Wright, who has never had a veteran mentor in his pro career so far, and Haden, the secondary will only be better prepared for this year.

If it takes Haden three years to finally have a dominating, break out year like Revis did in 2009 and makes a Pro Bowl in his second year as did Revis, then he will be worth the high first round pick that was used by the Browns to select him the 2010 NFL draft.
