Perhaps The Cleveland Browns Should Go Forward With a Blast From The Past

Justin KowalczykMay 17, 2010

What is one thing we know about the 2010 Cleveland Browns?

Its offense will revolve around the run.

With the stable of running backs and fullbacks that the Browns have, as well as the offensive line that blocked for the ninth-ranked rushing attack last season despite zero support from the passing game, the Browns have every reason to believe this season can be a successful one on the run.

But what if they added a new wrinkle to the playbook?

An offensive set I am sure many of you have not seen in quite some time, if at all, is the T-formation.

Now, I know what you are thinking: it's too predictable, right? Teams will load the box. They did that last season, or at least the last five games, and it didn't stop Cleveland from finding success in the running game.

But imagine this formation: QB Jake Delhomme under center,  Peyton Hillis in the backfield to the left, Lawrence Vickers behind Delhomme, either Montario Hardesty, Jerome Harrison, or James Davis lined up to Vickers' right, and Ben Watson and Robert Royal at the tight end positions.

The ball could theoretically go to either Hillis or one of the three aforementioned running backs, with Vickers mauling ahead as a blocker. However, if it goes away from Hillis, it adds another solid blocker along with Vickers.

Want to mix it up? Play action with Watson getting behind the defense, or on a quick out. Switch Royal with Evan Moore, and you have two tight ends with the ability to catch.

Don't get me wrong, this shouldn't be our main offensive set, but I see no reason why the T-Formation cannot make the same type of impact as the Wildcat has made on the NFL in recent years.

Especially on a team that's four-deep at RB, a top-five run blocking OL, and one of the better run blocking fullbacks.
