Fantasy Week In Review, May 10 – 16

Adam BernacchioMay 17, 2010

No intro this week. Let’s get right to it. Here are the fantasy studs, the players who have me concerned, and the potential pickups from the week of May 10th – 16th.

Fantasy Studs

Jose Bautista: .444/4/8/.565. Bautista has been a pleasant surprise for the Toronto Blue Jays this year. He has 10 home runs and currently leads the Jays in walks with 22.

New York Yankees v. Chicago Cubs

Martin Prado: .367/3/11. Prado had a monster week for the Atlanta Braves and has done a nice job at second base for them. He is hitting .323 for the year.

Luke Scott: .500/3/8. Scott got off to a slow start this year, but should be good for his usually 20-plus home runs in 2010.

Brennan Boesch: .481/1/8. I wrote about Boesch earlier in the day. If he keeps hitting, he will be in the Tigers’ OF all year.

Troy Glaus: .417/3/7. All of a sudden Glaus is batting .283 with five home runs and a .374 OBP. Just more proof that people tend to overreact two weeks into the season.

Miguel Olivo: .500/3/6. Olivo almost single-handedly beat me in fantasy this week. He doesn’t walk, but he will certainly contribute in the home run category.

Bronson Arroyo: 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA and six K’s in 16 IP. Arroyo doesn’t get you a lot of K’s, but he will most likely go deep in the game and get you either quality start or a decision.

Tim Hudson: 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA and seven K’s in 14 IP. Hudson walked as many as he K’d last week, but has been pitching in and out of trouble all year. For the year, Hudson is 4-1 with a 2.41 ERA.

Chad Billingsley: 2-0 with a 1.42 and 13 K’s in 12.2 IP. This is the Billingsley that Los Angeles Dodger fans have known to grow and love. He has been inconsistent this year, but this week Billingsley looked like the pitcher that was an All Star last year.

Jonathan Broxton: Four saves with a 0.00 ERA and four K’s in four IP. The premier closer in baseball continues to mow hitters down. Broxton has now 23 K’s in 15.2 IP in 2010.

Reasons for Concern

Oliver Perez: After another classic Perez meltdown in Florida, Perez was dumped from the starting rotation and jettisoned to the bullpen. Perez should be dropped in all fantasy formats.

Huston Street: It’s never a good sign when you have to be removed just five pitches into a rehab outing. That is what happened to Street on Saturday night. Making a rehab appearance for Double-A Tulsa, Street had to be removed after just five pitches because of a strained right groin.

Street is back in Denver getting examined, but this season has not gone well at all for Street. Street has always had a weird odd year/even thing going throughout his career, so it almost comes as no surprise that Street is having issues in 2010.

It appears Street won’t be back until at least June.

Andre Ethier: The early front-runner for National League MVP, Ethier sustained a fracture at the tip of his pinkie finger while taking batting practice prior to Saturday’s game. The Dodgers will decide on Tuesday whether or not Ethier will head to the DL.

A DL stint would be a big blow to Ethier owners because he has been a one man gang to start the season.

Ethier currently leads the NL in batting avg. (.392), HR (11), RBI (38), OBP (.457), and SLG. (.744).

Potential Pickups

Drew Storen: If you are in a deep Keeper League, Storen might be worth picking up as a closer for the future.

Jose Contreras: With Brad Lidge going on the DL and Ryan Madson already on the DL, Contreras becomes the closer by default in Philadelphia. He will get his chances closing for the Phillies.

Manny Corpas: Like Contreras in Philadelphia, Corpas becomes the defacto closer in Colorado. Franklin Morales is on the DL and Street, as I mentioned above, suffered another set back.

Corpas looked sharp Sunday against the Washington Nationals pitching a scoreless inning and recording the save.

Brennan Boesch: Boesch looks to have a full-time job in Detroit. The 25-year-old is off to a .380/3/19 start and has moved Carlos Guillen to second base.
