Fight distractions could cause Manny Pacquiao's defeat by Mayweather

Leo ReyesMay 16, 2010
Filipino boxer and congressman-elect Manny Pacquiao may end up losing to Floyd Mayweather Jr when they finally agree to fight in November due to the expected distractions from his constituents who have voted for him as representative of their province
With his track record of successive upset wins over superior boxers like Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto who are much bigger and far superior boxers in terms of height, reach and built, Manny Pacquiao no doubt, has a very good chance of winning over the much bigger Floyd Mayweather, Jr.who remains undefeated in his entire professional boxing career.

However, by virtue of his victory as congressman-elect of Sarangani province, the Filipino boxer will find it very difficult to concentrate on his training due to the many distractions associated with his being elected into public office as congressman, an elected post that carries with it a lot of responsibilities to his congressional constituents.
Distractions such as simple request for assistance from constituents who are in need of his personal attention or a mere interruption from a member of his staff who needs his signature on an urgent and important document, can affect the rhythm of his training. The Filipino boxer is expected to act when confronted with problems coming from his constituents. He is now a government official and by law he is expected to serve the people especially his constituents who voted for him.
He cannot escape from his sworn duty to serve the people as public funds are used in the discharge of his duties as an elected official of the country.
These are some of the distractions that will come into play when his training starts. Distractions can be disastrous to a carefully planned training. It can lead to frustration and loss of focus as the training team will have to make the necessary adjustments depending on the extent of distraction that comes during the training.
It must be admitted that these distractions are inevitable as they come as part of Pacquiao's transformation from a full-time professional boxer to a full blown politician who is mandated to serve his people. He cannot escape or disregard these distractions as they are part and parcel of his mandate as public servant.
As a well known public figure, Pacquiao cannot hide from his fans and constituents especially if he finally decides to train in the Philippines as he did when he fought Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico. Boxing fans, fellow politicians and now his constituents will always find a way to locate him and as a public figure he will have to make himself available while he is on scheduled training.
These distractions plus the fact that Mayweather is far superior in terms of height, reach and general body built, can take its toll on the popular Filipino boxer which may ultimately cause his defeat against the undefeated and now pound-for pound king Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
