Why Lions Offensive Shouldn't Be Taken Lightly

ChaosNuclear LolMay 16, 2010

Detroit Lions made a huge splash in terms of acquisitions in free agency, yet people still think that they will only win 2 or 4 games this upcoming season. Personally I think they are being dumb... (Sorry about that, but its true right?) , a person will never really know what will happen during games. Detroit Lions is probably one of the underrated team in NFL during these past 2 months, but this is some reason why they shouldn't count the Lions out.

During this past 2 years, Detroit Lions's offense had been criticized in many aspect, they were questioned and degraded. Well 2010 season is different, Detroit Lions's offensive capability is a deep threat to every team. Lets look at their probably starting offensive players

QB - Leading Detroit Lions's offensive core is the hard throwing Mathew Stafford (Who was able to talk with Maria Sharapova, "DAMN LUCKY GUY") <-- Mathew Stafford led Lions's passing yards last season. Despite of his injury, he was able to keep his head up and played every game until the end of the season. He showed real guts out there, thats why everyone respect him in the team. Personally, I think Mathew Stafford did not reach his full potential last season, and the reason is because of his receivers. Stafford's ace receiver Calvin Johnson wasn't able to do much last season because he was guarded everywhere, each game you will notice that he is guarded by at least 2 to 3 players. Which means he has to pick other receivers instead of passing it to Calvin (Its like Montana without Jerry Rice), besides that, the offensive protection did well, but not great. For the 2010 season, Detroit Lions acquired Nate Burleson and Tony Scheffler. If you look at their Highlights in your friendly neighbor Youtube, these two is not just your average receivers, they belong to the elite class that will bloom around a great quarterback, and thats where Mathew Stafford comes in. Along with Stafford's rocket arm and his pin point accuracy, racking up more than 3000 passing yards is possible.

Receivers - Leading the receiving core is Calvin Johnson A.K.A "MEGATRON", this guy is the real deal, he could be the Lions's biggest treat out there. Last season, he wasn't really able to produce that much with all of the defenders around him. But he shouldn't worry anymore, because Nate Burleson is now on his side.Nate Burleson will probably take some pressure of Calvin. Megatron will have a lot of space in the field to run around and catch the ball. With his size and speed as advantage, defenders will surely have a hard time guarding him.

From free agency,Detroit Lions acquired WR Nate Burleson. A lot of people thought it was a great deal because he can surely help the team in many aspect. First of all, he can take pressure off from Megatron, this guy could play anywhere you want, he can play inside and outside. If the defense are all over Calvin Johnson, he will be able to find open spaces to receive the football. Nate also brings a great attitude in the field and is going to become a big piece of the offensive puzzle.

From Broncos, Tony Scheffler. He is Detroit Lions's last leverage. If Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson are guarded pretty well, then he will be the go to guy. Using his catching prowess and his agility to move to any direction with ease, he will be able to sneak some catch in the field. If you look at his highlights in youtube, you will realize he is not just an average receiver.

Rookies - Jahvid Best is probably going to become one if not the best RB in the league. If your one step behind this guy, you are doomed. His elusive movement and crazy speed makes him really good for the backfield. If they are able to put some muscle in him, he can be Adrian Peterson in the making. If given proper blocking, he is capable of tearing up the defense.

Mr. Irrelevant Tim Toone has speed and agility that is best to not underestimate.Toone might not be as fast as Best but with proper guidance and training, he can evolve to be a great help for the team.

That is my opinion. Detroit Lions's defense also improved because of some acquisitions like (Ndmakung Suh, Kyle Vanden Bosch, Cliff Avril, Julian Peterson, Chris Houston, Backus , Corey Williams and more)

Question - There are still alot of jems in free agency, who do you think they should sign
