Three NHL Sophomores Who Will Break Out Next Season

Todd CordellMay 16, 2010

I thought about this all night deciding who would make the list and who wouldn't. I feel as I have made the right decision that these 3 Sophomores will have great seasons next year.

Tyler Bozak

Tyler didn't have the best start to his season with the Maple Leafs but near the end of the season he really stepped it up a notch. In his final 15 games Bozak recorded 14 points on a line with Phil Kessel and Nikolai Kulemin and if you ask me those are pretty impressive numbers for a rookie.

Final stats: 27 points in 37 games (8G, 19A)

Prediction: 55-65 points

Niclas Bergfors

He had a solid rookie season which started in New Jersey, and finished in Atlanta. In his time with New Jersey he was stuck on the 3rd line most of the year but when he got a chance on the top 2 lines he was very effective. When he got traded to Atlanta that is when he really started to heat up. Though he only had 17 points in 27 games with Atlanta it seemed as though he was their best player on both ends of the ice.

Final Stats: 44 points in 81 games (21G, 23A)

Prediction: 63-70 points

John Tavares

John had a solid rookie season with the Islanders and put up some decent numbers however, he didn't have the scoring talent on his team like Niclas Bergfors, Tyler Bozak or Matt Duchene had. John played his best hockey (which was pretty impressive) with LW Matt Moulson who surprised many with his performance last year. If Tavares gets a very good linemate to play with via trade, free agency, or the draft you should expect big things from him. Tavares is currently in Germany representing Team Canada in a great fashion with 6 goals in 4 games for Team Canada.

Final Stats: 54 points in 82 games (24G, 30A)

Prediction: 70-80 points
