The away side did slightly better in their second innings, scoring 279 mainly thanks to Ben Stokes' 106, but still fell to a innings and 62-run defeat.

The win propels Nottinghamshire to the top of the table after four wins in four games on 91 points.

Both of the rose counties didn't play this round, leaving Yorkshire second after five games on 83 points and Lancashire third after four games on 60 points.

Essex are fourth after six games on 53 points, following their draw with Kent.

Kent batted first making 474, with Geraint Jones making 135 and Darren Stevens 100 while Ryan ten Doeschate took 4-77.

Essex replied with 341, Tom Westley scoring 132 as Azhar Mahmood took 5-63.

Kent scored 204 in their second innings, thanks to Sam Northeast's 71, but Danish Kaniera kept Essex in the game with 4-68.

Chasing 338 to win, Essex reached 254-4 as the match ended in a draw.

Warwickshire are fifth on 53 points after four games with no game this round.

Kent are sixth after their draw with Essex leaves them on 37 points from five games, but they are still yet to win this season.

Somerset is also winless after five games, in seventh on 37 points following their draw with Hampshire.

Hampshire recovered from 123-5 to post a hefty 512 in their first innings, Sean Ervine hitting a first-class best of 237 not out.

Somerset replied with 524, James Hildreth and Jos Buttler making centuries, while David Griffiths and Rangana Herath each took four wickets.

Hampshire reached 37-2 in their second innings before a draw was agreed.

Durham sit in eighth after their first County Championship defeat since August 2008.

As well as a long injury list, Will Smith has been replaced as captain by Phil Mustard for the holders, who have 36 points from four games.

Hampshire are still bottom on 29 points after five games but at least ended their streak of four straight defeats with a draw against Somerset.
