Popular boxer Manny Pacquiao has been officially proclaimed congressman of the Philippines representing Sarangani province. The Filipino boxer scored a landslide victory over a wealthy and politically well-entrenched clan of the province.
The new Sarangani congressman was overwhelmingly elected by his constituents in the May 10 election with a vote ratio of nearly 2:1 in his favor. It was a landslide victory for the people's champ.
The official proclamation happened late Thursday, according to a late evening newscast by ABS-CBN News program Bandila.
"I am very happy because of the trust that the people have bestowed on me," Pacquiao said. "I will serve the people faithfully."
Manny Pacquiao said that as the new Sarangani congressman, he will prioritize his constituents first before working on his next fight.
Michael Koncz, Pacquiao's Canadian adviser, earlier announced the Filipino boxer will have his first post-election boxing fight in November. Koncz did not name Pacquiao's opponent but Top Rank's Bob Arum who is promoting Pacquiao's fights is now working on the resumption of the stalled talks for a Pacquiao-Mayweather match.
Top Rank Promotions owner Bob Arum, who flew to the Philippines a week before election day to give his support to the Pacquiao's candidacy as congressman, said he has started working on the Pacquiao-Mayweather, match which could happen on November 6 or 13 at the huge Dallas Cowboys stadium or at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In the meantime, Pacquiao said he will immediately buckle down to work to serve his constituents in Sarangani province.
