Randy Couture will Knock James Toney's "Lights Out"
NABO and IBA heavyweight boxing champion James “Lights Out” Toney is near finalizing a contract to fight UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture in the Octagon at UFC 118 in Boston’s TD Garden on Aug. 28.
At this juncture, the only minor obstacle preventing the contest is the weight at which the fight will be contested. Nevertheless, both sides agree that the matchup will ultimately be cemented at either 215 or 220 pounds.
Toney (72-6-3-2, 44 KOs), named Ring Magazine's Fighter of the Year in both 1991 and 2003, was a very skilled prizefighter who won titles in multiple weight classes.
However, Toney is also a portly specimen, in the mold of the character “Precious,” who was twice pinched for using the steroids boldenone and stanozolol.
“Toney couldn’t have beaten Couture in his prime and he thinks he can even compete with him now in the condition he’s in,” questioned Brad Sherwood, a trainer at Gold’s Gym in Medford, Ore.
For whatever reason, UFC President Dana White has expressed confidence that Toney can flourish in the world of mixed martial arts. Toney is being trained by famed MMA instructor Juanito Ibarra.
“We have been working on stretching, sprawling, and movement, all the things he will need to get a handle on,” said Ibarra, who once trained Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
Even at 46, Couture (18-10), the only five-time titlist in UFC history, will absolutely lambaste Toney with his ground-and-pound attack.
“He’s been running his mouth saying he’s going to knock everybody out,” said Couture, a three-time National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division-I All-America wrestler. “I’d be happy to welcome him to MMA.”
Ultimately, Toney’s foray into mixed martial arts will be unsuccessful and brief. The pudgy Toney has zero business whatsoever changing industries at the age of 41. If Toney is lucky, he will win one fight before he is exposed as an utter fraud.
Unfortunately for Toney, Couture will quickly put him out of his misery and he will never manage to emerge victorious in a UFC bout.
As a UFC fighter, Toney will rapidly be knocked “Lights Out.”
