Philadelphia Politics
It’s the middle of May, football is sound asleep while basketball is outside playing and having the time of its life. Football writers are coming to the players’ houses only to be greeted by the mothers of the players that tell them, “No Timmy, Tom Brady is still sleeping.” The writers need something to do, so why not read into what Tom Brady’s mom just told them. Sleep? Tom Brady isn’t sleep, he’s hungover!
Desean Jackson and Donovan McNabb are the latest players to be thrown into the football writers’ abyss of boredem. Desean Jackson was asked about how he felt of their current quarterbacks earlier this week. He responded with, “I don’t think we lost anything, even with McNabb being gone.” The media caught wind of this statement, and started fanning it all over the country like a nasty fart.

Of course the stench got back to McNabb and he responded un-McNabb like. He sounded like Terrell Owens circa 2004 to be perfectly honest. McNabb was quoted as saying, “It’s so wild when people get to talking when you’re not there, but when you’re there everybody loves you. So I guess people will go deeper into it than I will. I’m a Redskin, no longer an Eagle. I had 11 great years and I’m moving on with my life, so whoever may say things when I’m gone, more power to them, but it’s not making you look like a bigger man.”
No Donovan, Desean Jackson looks like the bigger man, and you look like the child. I’m not a McNabb basher, never have been, never will be. I like the guy. But does anyone remember what he said about Terrell Owens after T.O. got hurt against the Dallas Cowboys in 2004 during the Eagles’ Super Bowl run. Owens was hurt during Week 15 suffering a broken leg and reporters wondered if the Eagles could win the Super Bowl without Owens. McNabb was quoted as saying, ‘We can continue this thing. We can win without Terrell. We’ve been to three NFC Championship games without Terrell.”
In a 2006 interview with ESPN’s Michael Smith, McNabb defended his statements about T.O. in 2004 by saying, “When questions keep being raised that we won’t be the same offense without him, you want to continue to show confidence in the guys that are stepping in his spot, the guys that are out there. So you say, So the message I’m sending to the guys is we can still do this thing. And the rest of the team said the same thing.”
So what’s the difference between what McNabb said in 2004 from what Jackson said in 2010? Jackson was only showing support for his current quarterbacks on the Eagles’ roster. What is he supposed to say? I don’t think we can win with Kevin Kolb and McNabb gone. Even if Jackson truly believes that McNabb is a better QB than Kolb, as the team’s #1 receiver he can’t publicly state that his current QB cannot get the job done. He just can’t! So he did the politically correct/standard teammate thing and said that his team will be just fine with out McNabb. He voiced confidence in his young quarterback which is what he is supposed to do.
McNabb getting offended is very hypocritical. He’s been in the same position before just a few years back. He took the high road and gave the politically correct answer. But now when Jackson does the same thing, McNabb feels as if he was wronged? Negro please! You’re an 11 year vet going into your 12th year. You’ve taken you’re team to the Super Bowl, you’ve taken then to the NFC Championship game four times in a row. Hell, the Philadelphia media and fans have said worse things about you than your worst enemy ever would say. It takes thick skin to play quarterback, especially in the NFL on the east coast. With age comes a deterioration of physical skills, and in McNabb’s case it also looks like you lose a bit of thick skin/mental toughness as well.
That’s all I got,
