NFL Offseason Faux-Controversies
The NFL season is chock full of controversies. From quarterbacks, player's actions on and off the field, trades, players not living up to their hype. And we cover them all.
So what makes the offseason any different?
Well, for starters, there's a lull between the Draft, and camps open, so we search and search and try to find something to fill our pages.
Unfortunately, some of the time, it's worthless fluff.
Case in point, the DeSean Jackson-Donovan McNabb feud. There's no feud here. It's simply overzealous writers wanting something to, well, write about.
So Jackson says he's happy with the situation, and doesn't feel like the Eagles have lost anything even with McNabb being gone. So what? Isn't that what you want your players to say? Especially your stars.
How would it have benefited Kolb, or the rest of the Eagles if Jackson said he was worried about their chances, since No. 5 is gone? It wouldn't.
But it would've given us more to write about. I can see the headline now," DeSean Jackson says he doesn't believe the Eagles can make a run with Kolb."
And McNabb thinking this was a stab at him is disappointing too. Sure he's had issues with receivers in the past. But there was never a problem between the two of them.
And to say the he is the bigger man? If he was really the bigger man, he would've known the statement was just one teammate, expressing confidence in another.
DeSean is not supposed to say he feels his team is in trouble, even if he thinks they are. He's trying to get a new contract. That certainly would not have helped.
And yeah, we haven't made it easy on McNabb, by always going to him with these kinds of statements, and making him feel attacked. But he clearly wasn't here, and should've known that.
Bottom line, don't make this more than it is. I know we need things to write about during this downtime, but don't make it a distraction for two teams trying to move on from a transaction with as many implications as this one has.
