US Soccer: Bradley Announces 30 Man Preliminary Roster for World Cup

Charlie Davies, Freddy Adu, and Connor Casey are among the USMNT hopefuls not named to Bob Bradley's 30-man preliminary roster in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Bradley announced the men who will contend for the final 23 roster spots this afternoon. Of the 30, 26 to 28 are expected to attend training camp in Princeton, NJ from May 17-23.

Surprise inclusions in the squad were Robbie Rogers, Alejandro Bedoya, Eddie Johnson, and Robbie Findley.

The most notable absence is Davies, whose injuries from a near-fatal car crash in October were too much for the striker to overcome in time for the World Cup.

"Charlie has shown so much heart in his work to get back from his injuries," Bradley said. "We've monitored all his workouts."

"We feel it is Charlie’s best interest to continue his rehabilitation and focus on getting fully prepared to resume his professional and international career."

Real Salt Lake's Robbie Findley is a potential replacement for the speed that Davies offers, as is Eddie Johnson of Aris Thessaloniki. Both, however, failed to impress most US supporters in the qualifying buildup and March friendly against the Dutch.

Bedoya is a surprise to some, with only two caps internationally, but he provided an obvious spark against the Dutch, and has featured regularly at the club level for Örebro.

Rogers has been featured in many of Bob Bradley's sides, but his recent string of poor international showings had seemed to seal his fate out of the roster.

Included in the squad as well were recently emerging contenders Edson Buddle and Herculez Gomez. With Davies out, both Buddle and Gomez, who have been the two hottest US forwards in 2010, will have a shot to make the final roster.
