Madrid Open: Monday's Action
World Number One, Serena Williams came back from a set down and match point to book her place in the second round of the Madrid Open. Serena's opponent, Vera Dushevina won the first set 7-6 but the American produced a dramatic comeback, winning two tie-breaks and claiming victory.
Williams could have easily been knocked out as Dushevina had match point at 5-6 but despite treatment on her right thigh, she was able to claim two tie-breaks to defeat the Russian.
The shock of the day was the exit of Dinara Safina who lost 7-6, 7-6 to qualifier, Klara Zakopalova. Safina joined fellow high profile players, Henin, Sharapova and Kuznetsova who were also knocked out in the first round.
There were no problems however, for Caroline Wozniacki, Samantha Stosa and Nadia Petrova as they all went through to the second round. Wozniacki defeated Petra Kvitova 6-4, 6-2 and seems to have recovered from her recent ankle problems and Stosur won 7-6, 7-5 against Giselo Dulko. Petrova needed three sets but was victorious against Elena Vesnina (4-6, 6-2, 6-3).
