Theriot Better Than Castro?
Ryan Theriot will never have the fielding talents of Starlin Castro.
The 20-year-old has a superior arm; heโs quicker and can cover more ground.
This was evident during spring trainingโฆCastroโs a fielding web-gemโฆTheriot, not so much.
But Theriot, however, remains the better fielderโฆwhy is that?
Simple reallyโฆfielding is all about consistencyโฆmaking the routine playsโฆturning tailor made double playsโฆand understanding situational baseball.
All of this prevents runs from scoringโฆand Theriotโs mastered that principleโฆdespite his athletic shortcomings.
Castro, of course, is learning on the jobโฆand at the top level of all places. Yes, heโs superbly talented, but his three errors Monday nightโฆall on routine groundersโฆshows his consistency remains a work in progress.
Still, you canโt blame kidโฆheโs been rushed to the showโฆthrust into the spotlight and saddled with the burden of sparking a veteran clubโฆa club thatโs performed so badly Castro was summoned from Double-A ball in the first place.
With the Cubsโ continuous struggles offensively, it makes sense to move Theriot to second baseโฆCastro makes Chicago stronger up the middleโฆtheyโll allow fewer runsโฆand perhaps, muster enough offense to win a few games.
But the real question isnโt whether Castro is a defensive wiz, but ratherโฆcan he make enough routine plays to save the Cubsโ season?
