Paul Heyman Pens Fascinating Blog Comparing Brock Lesnar To Sports Gods
In what is sure to be a regular feature heading into UFC 116 on July 3rd, noted sports entertainment "Mad Scientist" Paul Heyman has penned a fascinating look at Brock Lesnar, and heaps heavy praise on Lesnar's opponent, UFC Interim Champion Shane Carwin.
Heyman first explains the unique opporunuty he has, in being so close to the current UFC Heavyweight Champion and top Ultimate Fight pay per view draw. Heyman compares himself and Lesnar's relationship to Howard Cosell and Muhammed Ali's.
Heyman writes, Imagine being able to sit with Babe Ruth during the 1927 season. Just to talk with him, listen to his thoughts and dreams as he pursued being the first to hit 60 home runs in one season ... what would it be like getting to understand what drove him, inspired him, motivated him, or even gave him cause for concern?
How about breathing the atmosphere around Wilt Chamberlain when he was heading to a game in which he facing off against Bill Russell? Or being the confidante of Wayne Gretsky when it became apparent he was going to earn the tag "greatest hockey player of all time" over and above the truly legendary Gordie Howe?
What must it been like to travel with Tiger Woods that first season he broke every barrier known to golf, and smashed every earnings record the game had ever seen? How fascinating would it have been to simply "be there" when Jim Thorpe decided "today, I am going to win?" When Hank Aaron was chasing Babe Ruth's home run record? When Ty Cobb was running roughshod on the Major Leagues? When Lawrence Taylor was eating quaterbacks? When no one could last in the ring with Mike Tyson? When Michael Jordan redefined the game?
But Heyman doesn't play favorites in this blog. Although it is widely known he and Lesnar are very close friends dating back to their legendary run to the top of WWE together in 2002-03, Heyman shows a lot of respect for the undefeated UFC Interim Champion Shane Carwin as well.
Heyman writes On July 3rd, Brock Lesnar returns to the Octagon. His opponent is a 12-0 Knockout King who is quickly becoming the Mike Tyson of the Ultimate Fighting Championships. No man has survived the 1st round with Shane Carwin. No man has withstood Carwin's violent assault. No man has fought Shane Carwin in this sport without leaving the cage a victim of a first round knockout.
Watch the video of Carwin vs Frank Mir. Ladies and gentlemen, readers of this blog, let me tell you I was right there, sitting 1st row. Only the cameraman and referee were closer. Shane Carwin hits hard. Scary hard. Inhumanly hard. Hard, fast, and violently. This guy is no F'N joke.
I think one of the most interesting parts of the blog is that Heyman has yet to comment whatsoever on the rumors regarding TNA Wrestling. Either he's playing a game, or he's just concentrating on the Lesnar fight. I found it just as interesting, however, that he never mentioned TNA at all. The parts comparing his close friendship to Lesnar and doing the same during Babe Ruth or Jim Thorpe or Muhammed Ali or Tiger Woods' rise to fame was a great look inside both Heyman and Lesnar's minds. The praise for Carwin is well earned. Carwin is a bad ass. This should be a really interesting, hard hitting contest between the UFC Champion and the undefeated Interim Champion on July 3rd. Great hype for the fight, just as tickets are coming on sale. Much like UFC President Dana White, former ECW owner and WWE Head Writer Paul Heyman is ever the promoter!
