Are The Titles Killing The PPV Buyrate?
So with no great surprise the PPV buys are down, partly i believe is because of this PG13 era, partly because the PPV's keep changing and have no real history (ie strange gimick PPV's like Fatal 4 Way, MiTB that are great as a one off but not a PPV) or the ones that do have a histroy and then get shafted (ie Survivor Series)
I have been watching some old PPV's from 1999-2004 of late, i enjoyed the old format and the excitement around the World Title and secondary titles, for example the Royal Rumble you'd have a tag title mate, the womens title match, the IC title then the main heavyweight title. Up until earlier this year you'd sit through 3 'world' titles and if we were luckly a secondary title that was thrown together at the last moment. Getting rid of the ECW title means more room for the secondary and tag titles which can be good news if excuted well. Also one promotion cant have 3 world titles, they cant have 2, there should only ever be ONE top performer.
The old PPV's had well thought out stories behind them whereas todays are rushed and in a recent comment from the Chairman he blamed the Creative Team for the lack of PPV buys which i believe to be true and are in a good need of a shake up as do most of the IWC.
There needs to be more prestige around the titles and that may mean less title defensives or having them at different shows, not one after the other at the same event. Or something really crazy like they can only defend the main titles at every second PPV, ie May PPV WWE title, June PPV WHC title, July PPV WWE title and so on.
There needs to be a focus on title unification, something simular to what happened to the tag titles to bring some more meaning to these PPV's and events. This would also bring more of a meaning to the titles, to have more top quality performers chasing the title (as we saw back in the Attitude Era).
The best time to have a title unification would be at the Night of Champions PPV or at WM.
If it was to be played out at WM, somehow the heel would jump someone, take their entry and enter the Rumble to win it, then having a 2 month lead up to Mania between the 2 champs for a title v title match (think WM6). This would work if the heel won.
If played out at NoC, the lead up to the event would have one champion (heel) bragging about how much better they are and they are the real champion and they are going to prove it against the other brands champion. Have the champs show up on each others shows for 6-8 weeks before the event to put their opponent off their game and play mind games leading up to the event.
It could be played out simular to the 2001 Invasion story line where at the same event, the Womans/Diva and the US/IC titles could be unified leaving only one female title (Woman's) and one seconday (IC). With 2 less titles around this could open the door for the Cruiserweight and the Hardcore titles back. As there is talk of TNA having a Hardcore championship in the next few months, then NOC might be a good time to unify the secondary to the IC and reactive the Hardcore title.
