UFC 113 Aftermath: Kimbo and Daley Cut from UFC, Koscheck To Coach TUF 12
UFC 113 may have been one of the most eventful UFC events in months, if not longer, and while the UFC 113 results do not tell the whole story, the recap of the event does. Not only did UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida lose his belt to Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in a rematch of their UFC 104 battle, but many other storylines emerged from the event in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Kimbo Slice Cut by UFC
One of the main attractions of the Pay Per View event was Kimbo Slice in his second official UFC fight. After defeating Houston Alexander in December at the TUF 10 finale, Kimbo was facing fellow TUF 10 contestant Matt Mitrione. Mitrione, although in only his second professional MMA fight, showed growth as a fighter hurting Kimbo with kicks and eventually scoring a TKO victory.
The win by Mitrione spelled the end of the Kimbo Slice era in the UFC as Dana White announced after the event that Kimbo had been cut by the UFC. When asked his reasoning, White said that other fighters deserved the chance more than Kimbo and that he had great respect for Kimbo as a person and for his representation.
Paul Daley Cut by UFC after sucker punch
While the main event was the biggest attraction of the PPV event, more action came during, or rather after, the fight between Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley.
While there was some trash talk and some name-calling leading up to the event, the actual fight was a rather boring one with Koscheck using his NCAA All-American pedigree to control Daley on the ground and avoid his big punches. Koscheck admitted some additional trash talk in the third round while controlling Daley on the ground, and it seems the Brit took exception to Koscheck's comments.
Well after the horn to end the fight in what was obviously a Koscheck unanimous decision victory, Daley threw a left hook to the eye of Koscheck in what could only be described by Joe Rogan as “the best punch Daley threw all night.”
As we reported on our MMA blog last night, Dana White cut Paul Daley from the UFC as a result of the punch and his lack of remorse for his actions stating that the UFC doesn't need Paul Daley and that is not what the sport of mixed martial arts is about.
Koscheck and GSP to coach TUF 12
Also resulting from the Koscheck win over Daley is that Josh Koscheck will coach on The Ultimate Fighter Season 12 opposite of Georges St-Pierre. Koscheck of course competed as a middleweight on The Ultimate Fighter's premier season in 2005 and has since evolved from a wrestler into a true mixed martial artist.
TUF 12 is set to debut on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 and will air on SpikeTV and production begins in June 2010.
While it is not clear what is immediately in front of Kimbo Slice and Paul Daley after their cuts from the UFC, either would probably be a strong draw atop a mid-level MMA promotion's fight card. Speculation for Strikeforce signing either or both fighters is already underway as well.
While the UFC 113 fights did significantly effect the UFC rankings , we will have to wait and see before we know the true impact of UFC 113 on the world of MMA.
