Tennessee Titans Draft Pick Breakdown: Rusty Smith

Blaize PenningtonMay 5, 2010

The Titans have had some pretty good drafts since Mike Reinfeldt. This year could be his best yet. Some really big names were taken along with some potential risks. For this series I'm going to break down each pick individually and let you know how successful I think they will become.

Our sixth round draft choice was one of the biggest shockers of all. I could not believe the Titans had pulled such a reach pick. What made things even worse is this was one of the picks that the Titans traded LenDale White and Kevin Vickerson to move up.

There were many well known quarterbacks left on the board that many people felt could be draft sleepers. However, the Titans decided to go with the small time quarterback out of Florida Atlantic, Rusty Smith.

I decided I was going to actually look into the guy before I made my decision on whether or not I like him. Offensive coordinator, Mike Heimerdinger, said he loved his footwork and he could teach Smith everything else he needed to know. However, FFToolbox describes his throwing motion as "unorthodox."

I personally am not a fan of the guy because he has issues with reading the field. Vince Young misses enough open wide receivers as it is, and a Young 2.0 is not what we need right now. It will take a lot of work for Smith if he wants to ever be a starter in the NFL.

As I said in an earlier article Chuck Cecil had a project in Robert Johnson and I believe Heimerdinger got himself a project in Rusty Smith.
