Champions League Betting – Bayern, Inter Meet In Madrid

Walker DanielsMay 5, 2010

Even though NBA championship odds are on the minds of most sports betting players, the biggest prize in European club soccer will be awarded on May 22nd in Madrid, where Bayern Munich will square off with Inter Milan, and it will be a tactical chess match between the Germans and Italians.

Champions League Betting – Saturday, May 22nd, 2:45 PM ET

Inter defeated Barcelona by an aggregate score of 3-2 despite a 1-0 away loss in the second leg, and they had to do it with 10 men.   Many say that Inter didn’t deserve to win as they played a defensive style, but what else were they supposed to do when Thiago Motta was controversially sent off with 62 minutes left in regular time?  Playing Barca straight up in Barcelona is dangerous enough as it is, but the players followed manager Jose Mourinho’s gameplan for the letter, and it paid off.  Those who are going to bet on Spurs Suns will see similarities between Inter and San Antonio, as the Spurs don’t question the methods of coach Gregg Popovich, they just execute, and win.  Inter still have to play the Coppa Italia final against Roma on Wednesday, while trying to hold them off in Serie A with two matches to go.

Bayern has already won the Bundesliga with one game to spare, while facing Werder Bremen in the final of the DFB-Pokal.  They reached this point by beating Lyon 4-0 on aggregate, including a 3-0 demolition of their opponents in France.  Ivica Olic scored after 26 minutes, and he added a pair of goals within 18 minutes of Lyon having one of their players sent off in the second half.  Bayern didn’t sit back going to France, and when they received their chance to put the French team away, they took it with brutal efficiency.

You’d have better luck of finding tennis betting odds than odds for this game, as linesmakers are waiting to see if the two get to the final unscathed, although early reports hint Inter will be favored to win their first European crown since 1965.  Both will be missing important midfielders as Franck Ribery is unlikely to win his appeal after a red card in the first leg of the semifinals, while Motta will also miss the match.  Inter will have the edge as many feel Mourinho is the best manager in all of Europe, and he won the Champions League with Porto, a surprisingly Portuguese squad, while Bayern counterpart Louis van Gaal’s European win came in 1995 with a stacked Ajax team.  Mourinho’s main task will be to stifle Bayern’s Arjen Robben, who he managed at Chelsea, and Inter has the discipline to carry out his plan.  We’re going with Inter Milan when we bet on sports, and so should you.
