ARKANSAS

News

According to the Northwest Arkansas Times, quarterback Ryan Mallett underwent an X-ray Monday which showed that his foot is healing as expected.

Barring an unexpected setback, the paper writes, Mallett is expected to be healthy enough to return and lead the team through June’s voluntary workouts.

CFG Analysis

Sounds like the big guy will be ready to roll this summer.

AUBURN

News

Nearly four months after transferring to Auburn, former Florida Gator and JUCO quarterback Cam Newton has been tabbed as the Tigers’ starting quarterback.

CFG Analysis

No surprise here.  Cam is an intriguing option in BCS-only leagues.

FRESNO STATE

News

During the team’s spring game, wide receiver Devon Wylie came up huge. Wylie caught seven passes for 74 yards and three touchdowns.

CFG Analysis

Fresno will need a top pass catching target to compliment quarterback Ryan Colburn and the running game. Once more news comes out during fall camp about Wylie being the No. 1 man, start targeting him when draft day comes around.

HAWAII

News

Per the Honolulu Star Bulletin: Receiver Rodney Bradley continued his comeback from a broken leg yesterday by running routes in drills and participating in the 7-on-7 period for the first time this spring.

Bradley had been limited to conditioning work with the strength coaches during practice and still took it easy yesterday. He said he still needs to build strength in his leg, but “it feels real good to have a helmet back on and catching passes with the team,” he said.

CFG Analysis

It’s looking more and more like Bradley might be ready to play this fall. When healthy, this Rainbow Warrior is a WR2 in All-120 leagues.

LOUISIANA-MONROE

News

Louisiana-Monroe redshirt freshman Kolton Browning, has supplanted senior Trey Revell, as the starting quarterback for the Warhawks. ULM announced the news by releasing its depth chart Tuesday morning.

CFG Analysis

This is mildly surprising given that Revell had his moments last fall. We’re looking forward to seeing Browning in action this fall.

NEW MEXICO STATE

News

Coaches are looking for bigger things from running back Seth Smith. The running backs coach believes it wouldn't be unheard of if Smith were to reach 1,500 yards.

CFG Analysis

Smith totaled 1,000 yards in 2009 but was only able to reach the end zone once on the ground. He will have to find a way to score touchdowns in order to make a fantasy impact.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS

News

Per ESPN.com: Northern Illinois running back Chad Spann, last year’s starter, was held out of spring practices because of offseason shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum. That allowed players such as Ricky Crider, Iowa State transfer Cameron Bell, and junior college transfer Jasmin Hopkins to emerge.

Spann was the workhorse last season with 179 carries for 1,038 yards and 19 touchdowns but this year it could be more of a committee system.

CFG Analysis

Spann should be fully recovered in time for summer workouts. He still figures to get the most carries in this offense, but the emergence of these other guys isn’t great news for Spann owners.

OREGON

News

During Oregon’s spring game, running back Kenjon Barner led all running backs with nine carries for 96 yards. Barner led all rushers due to the limited role of LaMichael James.

CFG Analysis

Understanding who the No. 2 running back will be behind LaMichael James is an important part of understanding how to draft James. If James finds himself in trouble again, “handcuffing” his backup will ensure you’re not left out in the cold.

TEXAS TECH

News

Texas Tech running back Baron Batch underwent surgery Tuesday for a sports hernia, Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said. Batch’s recovery time is projected at three to four weeks, Tuberville said, and he is expected to return to offseason workouts in mid-June. “That’s been bothering him for a while,’’ Tuberville said. “We just needed to get it fixed.’’

CFG Analysis

Batch has had his share of injuries over the past year.  Let’s hope he is full go this summer as coach Tuberville suggests.

USC

News

During the spring scrimmage, quarterback Matt Barkley bruised the thumb on his throwing hand. He injured the thumb on a defender’s helmet, but the injury appears to be minor.

CFG Analysis

Barkley managed to finish the spring without throwing a single interception, despite the injury. Barkley looks to be a solid sleeper in BCS leagues.

News

True freshman running back Dillon Baxter continue to impress the coaches as he showcased his skills in the spring game. Baxter totaled 13 carries for 129 yards.

CFG Analysis

Baxter won’t be able to make a big enough fantasy impact for 2010, but he will be a great keeper pick for 2011.
