Do Arsenal Have a Chance of Signing Gianluigi Buffon?

Jamrock RoverMay 5, 2010

There's a game in Manchester tonight between Man City and the Spuds, and for some bizarre reason it has suddenly become important to Arsenal.

With the confidence of the fans seemingly even worse than that of the players, we have to hope that the Spuds don't win tonight or it will lead to some very nervous Arsenal fans come Sunday afternoon.

Despite the fact that Fulham have played a ridiculous amount of games this season and have a very small squad, they are still playing well no matter who the opponent is. They played against West Ham last Sunday and they have to play at home to Stoke tonight before their short journey to the Emirates on Sunday.

With the Europa League final only three days after that game, we would hope that Fulham's minds and best players would be elsewhere on Sunday, but as ReZnuK pointed out yesterday, there is an air about Fulham at that moment that means that a team comprised of youth team players would put on a good performance.

Added to that, we have the fact that Arsenal's players are completely bereft of confidence and have lost the ability to put up a performance that the fans expect and deserve for the last home game of the season.

It will be interesting to see how the players can perform if the result goes our way tonight and we are guaranteed the third spot before Sunday's game.

Surely, if that is the case, they can shake off the shackles, play with some freedom, and give the fans a performance to be proud of in the last game of the season. It would certainly help to improve the despondent mood among a lot of fans at the moment.

The result of the club's Goal of the Month competition for May was announced and Walcott won it for his goal against Wigan. To be honest, there was very little competition as we only scored five goals in five games during April as things went from bad to worse.

Our youth team were beaten 4-1 at Crystal Palace last night, but they had already wrapped up their section of the league and will now play "Manure" in the semifinals of the Academy League on a date to be confirmed.

We are again linked with both Buffon and Hart today, and while I would love us to sign Buffon, I don't know if we could afford to pay him what he will be looking for.

We have the money alright, but I'm sure he would want more money than our current top earners and I can't see us breaking the wage structure for any player no matter how badly we need them.

We are also linked with French defender Mamadou Sakho of PSG, who is a 6'1.5" defender. He fits the bill of a typical Arsenal signing in so far as he's young and French, but it's all just speculation at the moment.

We are also linked with Luic Remy of Nice yet again, as we have been so often in the past, but with Chamakh looking certain to join us, I sincerely doubt if we will sign another striker.

That's it for a relatively short blog today. I won't be watching the Spuds vs. City match tonight as I'll be playing myself, but my thoughts will be there and the ideal result would be a draw I suppose.

Here's what we can expect to see next season if we sign Buffon.

See you tomorrow.
