Better Than the UFC? Check Out What Nick Hurley Does

Gary HermanMay 3, 2010

Can the UFC compete?

The Ultimate Fighting Championship routinely runs a series of promo videos to help build their shows, and to get people purchasing their pay-per-view events. The advertisements are splintered into most television shows aimed at their target audience.

But the UFC’s videos as not as good as they could possibly be. Youtube.com guru Nick Hurley (aka "NickTheFace" ) has taken to the airwaves and proven that.

His self-made videos hyping upcoming fights are simply the most exciting and adrenaline pumping commercials possible. Plus, he’s not just limited by fights on upcoming UFC shows.

"It was around the time that Brock Lesnar had just beaten Frank Mir at UFC 100," Hurley said, when asked how he got started making the short videos. "Everyone was talking about a possible fight between them if the UFC signed Fedor."

"There was so much buzz around it that I decided to make a trailer for the fight."

The Lesnar vs. Fedor promo garnered in excess of 375,000 views. From there, his fan base began to quickly grow. People were tuning in with high anticipation of his next "commercial" spot.

Hurley followed up with videos on Michael Bisping vs. Wanderlei Silva , Lyota Machida vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua , and one of the biggest potential dream fights in UFC history, Anderson Silva vs. Georges St. Pierre .

Keeping up with all the current bouts, Hurley has recently released his trailer hyping the upcoming Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen match.

Hurley is hopeful that his highly entertaining trailers will springboard his career.

"I’m looking to improve my video editing skills and then try and find work in that field," Hurley said, when asked about his future plans, "but yeah, the UFC would be amazing."

Judging from the positive feedback Hurley has received on his youtube channel, the UFC should definitely take notice—some of the fighters already have.

"Bisping ‘tweeted’ a link to my promo for him and Wanderlei," Hurley said, "and Dan Hardy has had one of my videos on his website which was cool."

Hurley creates the trailers by splicing together footage from prior fights and interviews with heart-pumping songs from up and coming bands.

"The soundtrack Heart of Courage by Two Steps from Hell is my favorite piece of music I've used so far," Hurley said about his choice of audio.  "I prefer the over-the-top dramatic style of promos with the epic, emotion-invoking music.

"They just seem to get me more amped up for the fight-even if it is a bit WWE like.  The UFC does not use that too much. I've heard from a lot of people who don't rate their 'talking heads' style much, but it’s all just down to personal taste."

With over 1.1 million views on his videos , many MMA fans are certainly in agreement with Hurley’s preferences. Hurley has carved out a very successful following on youtube.com.

Fans and fighters alike are all anxious to see what the editing and technology whiz comes up with next. While Hurley has no confirmation that the higher-ups at UFC have seen his work, he does know that some people in the company are certainly paying attention.

"Zuffa’s copyright department definitely has," Hurley said, when asked if he knew if the top MMA promotion has watched his work. "I’d love to know what the UFC made of my stuff."

Based on his constantly growing popularity, what Hurley can see is that many MMA fans love his videos.  Hopefully, Hurley gets his wish and the UFC comes calling as well.
