Rookies to Target in 2010

James Hatfield May 3, 2010

I will be writing about rookies for 2010 that I am targeting and the amount of production you can expect. I will give a dynasty and redraft opinion for each rookie.

Ben Tate: was there any doubt the Texans would be looking for a rookie RB in the draft?  I like Tate to be an excellent pick in 2010 and will split carries with Slaton and Foster before becoming the feature back in Houston.  I am looking for a near 1,000 season with 5 TD's which makes him an excellent dynasty pick and great back-up RB in redraft leagues.  Some people are saying he will be the rookie of the year, but he is not my pick for rookie of the year.

Javhid Best: The news is calling him the feature back in Detroit.  I think he will be splitting carries with Morris, but will be used in passing downs as well for Stafford to dump off to.  I would love to have him in a PPR dynasty or redraft league and he will be a 1,000+ yard total RB (receiving and rushing) with 8 TD's.  He will be a consistent back from week to week and I wouldn't hesitate to grab him in all formats.

Montario Hardesty: The Browns are a mess, but have a solid stable of RB's for 2010 with Hardesty, Harrison, and Davis.  I envision Hardesty in a true RBBC situation for 2010 and is my least favorite back on this list.  He does have the upside to be a feature back, but he is a buyer beware pick and he could post anywhere between 250 yards to 1,250 yards and 2 TD's to 10 TD's so he is boom or bust.  If he is there later in your draft feel free to take a chance and stash him on your bench.

Ryan Mathews: Best pick on the list and my choice for Rookie of the Year in 2010.  I have the first pick in my expert league rookie draft today at noon and I will snagging Mathews and have zero doubt that he will give me 1,250+ yards and double digit TD's.  Wonderful situation in San Diego allowing him to be a feature back with minimal RBBC; amazing pick in 2010.

C.J. Spiller: Spiller is a well rounded RB in a less than desirable situation in Buffalo.  I do think he will be productive and if you are in a league that also gives you return yardage points you are going to see another Reggie Bush type back.  I am looking for 1,000 total yardage (rushing and receiving) with 5 TD's in 2010.  Very solid dynasty pick and a good redraft pick for PPR leagues.

Demaryius Thomas: Thomas is going to be the #1 rookie WR in 2010.  He is in a situation where he comes in as the #1 WR with Orton who can get him the ball.  Marshall put up the record number of of catches in a game with Orton and Thomas will fill Marshall's shoes.  I expect him to be a killer in PPR leagues in both dynasty and redraft leagues.  I have no doubt he will post 1,000+ yards and 5+ TD's in 2010.  Best rookie WR available in my opinion.

Dez Bryant: Wade Phillips calls him the best rookie WR he as ever seen and I believe him.  Bryant will be a starter with Williams and Miles in a high flying offense.  The only thing hurting him is the number of pass targets for Romo, but if he hits it off with Romo he is going to be dangerous.  He is a bit of a boom/bust pick in 2010 because his production depends on his relationship with Romo.  He could be as low as 500 total yards but could explode over 1,000 yards and the same goes for TD's.  VERY solid dynasty pick and I wouldn't let him slip too far before drafting him.

Arrelious Benn & Mike Williams: There is no doubt that Benn and Williams will both start immediately for the Bucs.  They are in a young offense but you can expect both to produce 750+ yards and 4 TD's making them both solid back-ups and great picks in dynasty leagues.

Rob Gronkowski: Ben Graham out, new young TE in; Rob is a solid TE with great hands and a QB that loves to throw which is a recipe for fantasy sleeper in my book of tricks. Dynasty owners need to pounce on this rookie.

The players mentioned are all solid picks for your 2010 dynasty leagues and redraft leagues. Obviously if you are in a dynasty league you can bump up all these players on your draft guide.
