Tim Tebow The Marriage Ref!

Tim Tebow the Marriage Ref!

I was standing next to a good friend at a political event on the West coast when he turned to me to express condolences on the Jaguars draft. He knows that my weekends in the fall revolve around the Gators and the Jaguars. The rest of my weekends revolve around me wishing it was football season and playing NCAA 10 on XBOX.

He has strong ties to Hawaii and told me how every one in Hawaii was ecstatic about Alualu going in the first round.

It’s understandable, Tyson Alualu is the local boy they should be excited. Every one loves when the local boy does good. Even though Alualu played football away from Hawaii friends, family and local people who may never have watched him play in one single college game celebrated their boy going to the NFL. It’s something every one can feel good about.

Many years ago I met a man from Arkansas. He was a Republican, but because he was from the same home town as Bill Clinton and he had voted for Clinton twice. Being the local boy going on to do big things can bring a community closer, there is a sense of pride and unity that people will express. Ty Cobb got a whole county named after him!

I can’t think of two cities more different then San Francisco and Provo Utah. But for almost a decade you could not go any where in Provo with out seeing people wearing 49ers merchandise or cars with 49ers stickers or flags. Why? Steve Young.

The home town hero is a force that can bridge a gap as wide the most Liberal city in America with the most Conservative and religious city in America.

So when the Jacksonville Jaguars passed over the ultimate home town hero for a man that probably no one in Jacksonville had ever heard of there was bound to be rage. What I didn’t expect was the level of rage, bitterness and anger. All of it is part of the bigger picture, a picture of a marriage that has fallen apart.

The Jaguars never understood their market. A football team failing in Florida is like losing money in the oil business.

The fans are there, the product they want isn’t.

The Gators and Seminoles of the 1990’s changed the face of college football with high powered offenses. The college teams in Florida are sleek and sexy, they play an exciting brand of football. On the flip side for a decade and a half the Jaguars have played the blandest most boring kind of football on the planet. Watching the Jag’s play on Sunday after spending Saturday watching college ball is like leaving your hot sexy girl friend to go home to your fat ugly wife.

And that’s where we are at, Jacksonville and the Jaguars are in a dead marriage. Sure they are together by default but there is no real love.

Tebow could have sparked some love back in that relationship. Tebow could have given us a reason to go out on Sunday’s. Tebow could have put butts in the seats. Tebow the local boy gone to the big show could have saved this marriage.

But for sheer arrogance this marriage is dead. Jacksonville will be littered with Bronco’s jerseys much like Provo was with 49ers jerseys. And the Jaguars will pack up their stuff and move away and in the future we will all look back at this Dr. Phil moment and pin point the exact moment the marriage died. It may go on for a few more years, but the love faded one day in April 2010.
