Who Said That The WWE Cant Make Promos Like They Used To?

john stantonMay 2, 2010

Today's wrestling fans are constantly picking apart each aspect of the business, which centers around Vince Mcmahon's PG-based WWE. These criticizms are about booking, pushing older stars, being boring, having lame jokes and humor, guest hosts, etc.

However, one thing that the IWC fans heavily underrate is the promos WWE is giving out. Week in and week out, all I hear about is someone talking about a lame build up and promo for every match that comes out on a ppv. For some this is correct, but in some instances, it is very, very wrong.

Most people's view of a perfect promo is the Rock and Austin's "My Way" build up for WM X-7. They say these new promos are boring, lack pure emotion, get no crowd reaction, and are simply lame. I think a good amount of them are all but lame, and one of them which I will later mention matches that promo made a decade ago.

Why I say this, you ask? Because although I already enjoyed some of WWE's current promos, after re-seeing this one promo through youtube, I knew this could not be kept secret.

This promo I am talking about is the unofficial promo for HBK and Undertaker in WM26, which was not widely recognized because it was longer than average, and they had to redo it. However, it aired about 4 times on RAW, and each time I saw it I had to replay it, simply because it got me hooked. You can blame Vince's decision making for not making this official, because I feel it was on par with "My Way," which is the top of the bar in most people's opinion.

Have a look for yourself, and don't be biased before watching it.

I felt this promo had all the neccesities of a historic one. The song, which is a huge part of it, went hand and hand with the booking and storytelling of the feud, and that Shawn wants to turn the tables this time. The storytelling by Shawn, Undertaker, and especially Triple H brought my heart into the promo, and that I felt the need for redemption too. It made me want to watch the match, just to see if Shawn made that "Deal with God." Plus, the phrase they used two times, one being the finisher to the promo was simply epic, and a phrase that could be one of Shawn's memorable ones in his legacy.

Now, I want to hear your guys opinions about it. Did you think it was on par with Rock-Austin's? Vote and leave your responses below.
