Cristiano Ronaldo: His American Dream

Jeff HarbertJul 17, 2008

Like most people, you are probably absolutely sick and tired of all the rumors revolving around Cristiano Ronaldoโ€™s future.ย  Every single day the same old stuff is printed in the media.ย  Every day Cristiano Ronaldoโ€™s name is in the headlines, and no, itโ€™s not because of his recovery from surgery.ย  People arenโ€™t concerned about whether or not heโ€™ll be fit for the new season.ย  They only care about where the Portuguese superstar will be playing next season.

Unfortunately, I donโ€™t have the answer to that question.ย  If I had to make a guess, however, Iโ€™d say heโ€™ll still be at Old Trafford next season.ย  But thatโ€™s not why Iโ€™m here.ย  Iโ€™m not about to add fuel to the speculation regarding the United's number seven and his future.ย

Disregard Ronaldoโ€™s immediate future for just one minute, although preferably until next summer!ย  Ronaldo has recently claimed he would be open to someday playing in the United States.

David Beckham, Unitedโ€™s right-winger before Ronaldo, came to Old Trafford, made the move across the Atlantic Ocean more than a year ago, and many footballers in Europe have also considered a move to the MLS.ย

Former Middlesbrough midfielder Abel Xavier and ex-Aston Villa striker Pablo Angel both play in the MLS and have already made a big impact.

Ronaldo, in Los Angeles for the prestigious ESPY awards, claimed he would be more than open to a move to the MLS in the future.ย

โ€œThe league itโ€™s much better than a few years ago, the future is getting better and better,โ€ said Ronaldo.

โ€œI prefer to play in Europe at the minute, but in the future, who knows?ย  Iโ€™ve spoken with Abel (Xavier) a few times and he says itโ€™s great.ย  Itโ€™s great to play here (in the US).โ€

Obviously there is no way Ronaldo will make a move to the MLS in the near future, but I guess we shouldnโ€™t rule out a move to the United States altogether.ย

Personally, Iโ€™m so tired of all of the rumors about Ronaldo going to Real Madrid, that Iโ€™d rather hear about rumors about Ronaldo going to the MLS in ten years time, or whenever it might be.ย
