Ice Box
Projected Odds: 12-1
Pulpit–Spice Island, by Tabasco Cat
Ice Box was sired by Pulpit, a horse that won the Blue Grass Stakes and ran fourth in the 1997 Kentucky Derby. Pulpit has sired multiple Graded winners. Her dam, Spice Island, was a marathoner that won the Grade 2 Long Island Handicap.

Trainer Nick Zito is no stranger to the Kentucky Derby winner’s circle. He won with Strike the Gold in 1991 and Go For Gin in 1994. Owner Robert LaPenta’s best finish in the Kentucky Derby was The Cliff’s Edge who placed fifth in 2005 and a Da’Tara in the 2008 Belmont Stakes at 36-1.

Ice Box won his most recent effort in the Grade 1 Florida Derby at 20-1 where he came from last to first and will probably use that one run closing style on Derby day. He needs pace to run at and should get that pace in the Derby. One run horses have actually fared well in recent Derby races but Ice Box needs the field to come back to him. If the pace is slow, it could be a tough task for him.
