Stately Victor is part of the first crop sired by Ghostzapper who earned over $3 million in his lifetime including wins in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic and Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap. Ghostzapper has sired multiple winners but Stately Victor is the only one to have won a stakes race, the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes where he shocked a star-studded Blue Grass field at odds of 40-1. The odds on Stately Victor winning the Kentucky Derby will probably be similar although a tough task for a horse that lost four “Other Than Allowance” races prior to his shocking victory in the Blue Grass.

This will be trainer Michael Maker’s first Kentucky Derby appearance. Maker also saddles potential entrant Dean’s Kitten. The good news is that distance shouldn’t be an issue as Stately Victor just won a significant Derby prep race by four lengths. The bad news is that Stately Victor is clearly outclassed and a repeat performance seems unlikely. But then again, Mine that Bird’s performance last year was unlikely too.
