St. Louis Rams Draft Picks 2010: Does It Make the Grade?

The Rams made a total of 11 picks in the 2010 draft.

We had one choice in each of the first four rounds, two in the fifth, two in the sixth, and three in the seventh.

Both a cursory and a deeper examination of the choices they made indicates that the Rams made a large number of strange and high-risk moves.

As I study this list I am stunned by the presence of basketball players, career backups at Alabama, guys not invited to the combine, and a guy with a draft ranking of 454th best athlete in the draft.

The strange thing is that there were only 255 total picks in the 2010 draft.  Why select a guy with a 454 next to his name?  Can't you sign him in free agency?

Jim Mora Jr., the former head coach of the Seahawks who was scheming against us last year, condemned our day 3 efforts on the NFL Network's Draft Review show.  When asked who blew it on day three, Mora answered "The Rams.  They needed receivers and tight ends for Sam Bradford to throw to, and they didn't get them."

This criticism came from an authoritative source, who knows us as a competitor would.  I could not have said it better myself.  Very well said Coach Mora.

Here is the full list for your consideration:

What are my impressions?  Not good.

1. Too much balance

2. Too much defense

3. Highly questionable selections at the tight end position

4. We left high-quality wide receivers on the board.

5. We took a basketball player over a host of football players

6. We took guys who were not invited to the combine.

7. There is a strange pipeline active between South Florida U and the Rams.

8. There is a strange pipeline active between West Texas A&M and the Rams.

Can I request that we draft football players with all our choices in future years? Is that too much to ask?

I just hate whiffing on basketball players, when there are actually a few football players left on the board for us to take.

Memo to Billy Devaney: I would sure hate to justify this list to Stan Kroenke or Shahid Khan.

You better hope some of these strange choices you made pan out.  You better hope none of the guys you left on the table turn out to be the next Brandon Marshall.

This looks suspiciously like the sort of list that makes the owner want to fire you in a year or two.
